Overview:
As a member of the Water and Integrated Cropping Systems (WICS) team, the incumbent works closely with the Nebraska State Climate Office to develop and deliver extension programming focused on meteorology and climatology that: a) improves agricultural profitability and sustainability; b) reduces environmental risk; c) encourages good stewardship; d) enhances community and natural landscape resiliency; and e) expands awareness of climate smart management practices. The incumbent serves the state of Nebraska and provides support to statewide WICS extension programming.

Agricultural Meteorology/Climate Educator:
  • Leads and collaborates closely with university colleagues in visioning, developing, and delivering agricultural meteorology and/or climatology educational programming and products focusing on community and stakeholder preparedness for extreme events, crop and livestock decision support tools, drought and flood warning and tracking systems.
  • Conducts needs assessments and identifies educational program priorities by working with national and state organizations such as the Nebraska State Climate Office, National Drought Mitigation Center, National Centers for Environmental Information, National Integrated Drought Information System, Extension Disaster Education Network, and the National Weather Service, as well as with unit leaders, extension advisory committees, and local stakeholders (e.g., farmers, agribusinesses, Natural Resource Districts, state and federal agencies, and commodity associations).
  • Facilitates a collaborative-learning environment with crop producers, state and federal agencies, and industry representatives by supporting the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network to collect, analyze, and interpret data, resulting in development of research-based decision-making strategies for clientele utilizing climate smart technologies and management practices.
  • Uses innovative teaching strategies and learning methods coupled with a variety of cutting-edge platforms (e.g., podcasts and canvas catalog courses) to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate programs (via impact assessment) for a robust extension education program focused on WICS topics in Nebraska.
  • Provides engagement to communities in support of risk management and decision support strategies for increased resilience.
  • Participates in professional development to enhance and maintain expertise in agricultural meteorology and climatology as well as extension pedagogy.
  • Leverages expertise to provide learning opportunities via professional development in-service activities for Extension Educators and other WICS members.
  • Uses entrepreneurial practices to secure grant funding, contracts, program fees, and partnerships/sponsorships to leverage the extension educational program resource base, and to expand program reach.
  • Supports youth development programs by teaching in areas related to WICS.


The incumbent accepts committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree required and must be completed prior to start date; one degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in applied meteorology or climatology or related field with an emphasis in agricultural meteorology or climatology.
  • Experience working with individuals, coworkers, and teams to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by college, career, and/or community activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing and delivering agricultural meteorology or climatology educational programs and products focused on community and stakeholder preparedness for extreme events, crop and livestock decision support tools, and/or drought and flood warning and tracking systems.
  • Successful experience developing financial support for educational programs, including securing grants and contracts as well as cost recovery efforts.
  • Outstanding leadership skills as demonstrated by roles in college, career, and/or community activities.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of social media communication and education, including managing website, blog, Facebook page, and Twitter accounts for a professional organization.
