We are seeking a highly motivated Nutritionist Assistant for the Smyth County Health Department located at:

This is a wage position limited to 29 hours per week or 1500 hours per year; works approximately 29 hours per week on a variable schedule.

Nutritionist Assistants support the Mission, Vision, and Values of Mount Rogers Health District by providing quality, customer-focused administrative support in our local health departments, schools, and other community locations. Under the guidance of a Nutritionist and/or Nutritionist Associate, obtains health and diet information from clients and provides low-risk nutrition education according to protocols developed by the Nutritionist. Independently schedules WIC appointments, maintains WIC records, compiles WIC reports, and secures and verifies information needed for WIC income eligibility determination. Instructs clients about program guidelines and assists with WIC draft distribution.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to: interview clients & collect client information; interpret, document, calculate & compile routine data; routinely obtain blood sample/finger stick from infants, children and women; provide patient education
  • Knowledge and skills with computers and software, i.e. Crossroads, internal webmail
  • Some knowledge of basic nutrition, nutritional standards, special diets & food service operations
  • Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of patients and work effectively as a member of a health care team

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school with additional training or course work in dietetics, food services or a related field
  • Some experience in food production or in a nutrition program

Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check and other background E-Verify. Other financial, credit, driving, or background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions. Completion of Statement of Economic Interests will be required upon employment.

VDH requires all Health Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a onetime dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td o r Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.
