We are 35 beds (33 of them are private rooms) divided between the Gibbon Building (17 beds) and the Pavilion building (18 beds).

Our patient population is med/surg, mostly orthopedic with joint replacements and revisions, foot and ankle, skeletal tumors, orthopedic trauma and regular trauma, some spine overflow, and some hands. We sometimes get other med/surg patients, when necessary, based on hospital need. We rely on teamwork and focus our efforts on patient safety and prevention of falls. Our externs work every other weekend, either day shift or evening shift, with a set pattern. Our patient population turns over quickly during the week, and there is always the opportunity for weekday day or evening shifts (4, 8, 12 hours) if the extern is interested. We encourage our externs to broaden their learning experience by showing interest in watching other skills and tasks of the RNs.

Job Duties:

• Work under the supervision of the professional nurse, carry out routine patient care assignments, and work in controlled care situations and performs established nursing procedures for individual or groups of patients.
• Demonstrates accountability for assigned patients on shift or assignment.
• Perform vital signs measurement:
  • Temperature
  • pulse
  • respiration
  • blood pressure
  • pulse oximetry readings
• Record on patient chart.
• Monitor intake and output.
• Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the Hospital.

• BSN student who has successfully completed a med/surg clinical and BLS required.
