The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center leads the nation in implementing a specialty practice model for Clinical Research Nursing which defines the roles and contribution of nurses providing care to research participants.   • Under the supervision of an experienced nurse or preceptor:
    • Exercises the full domain of practice for the specialty of clinical research nursing including providing clinical care to research participants, supporting protocol implementation, data collection, continuity of care, human subject's protection.
    • Utilizes nursing skills and associated technology to provide nursing care to routine, uncomplicated, predictable patient populations who are participants in biomedical research protocols, their families and significant others. Care requirements are determined by the scope of study participation, the clinical condition of the research participant and the requirements and clinical effects of research procedures.
    • Monitors research participant responses to study and clinical treatment. Interventions adjusted based on findings, and adverse events / issues reported promptly to the research team.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practice into nursing practice.
  • Support biomedical research through detailed observation, measurement, and accurate data collection related to pertinent assessment as defined by the protocol specifications and the nurse's clinical judgment.
  • Safely and competently administer research interventions to consenting research participant including evaluating and documenting participant response.
  • Accurately document observations, identify trends and important findings, and effectively communicate this information to the interdisciplinary research team and nursing colleagues.
  • Provide feedback to colleagues and investigators on all issues affecting the quality of the research endeavor.
  • Protects research participant data in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with team members to create and communicate a plan of care that balances clinical care needs with research needs and allows for safe and effective collection of clinical research data.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary conferences and activities regarding research participant care and protocol implementation Effectively delegates work to support personnel.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-07 level if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:

1. Possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision.

To qualify for the Superior Academic Achievement provision, the applicant must meet one of the requirements for superior academic achievement based on:

a) Graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in a college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
b) Having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;
c) Being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society.
d) Graduated within the top third of your class.

OR

2. Possess a bachelor's degree in nursing, and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level).

OR

3. Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience at the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing venipuncture to obtain blood specimens; recording case histories to include taking temperatures, pulse, respiration, height, weight, and blood pressure; testing vision and hearing AND possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing program.

4. Completion of at least one full year of nursing graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.
