Native American Youth Cultural Coordinator


As a coordinator you will be expected to plan, develop, and implement the Indian Tribe of Wisconsin (ITW) Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake School Program for Native American juvenile offenders. This position will provide cultural, educational, and historical activities for Native American students residing in a Department of Corrections (DOC) juvenile detention center. Assists in consultation services to school staff, state agencies and at-risk prevention services in the tribal communities. Daily attendance is an essential job duty. Minimal travel is required.


Principal Duties:

  • Provide cultural counseling to Native American youth in individual or group settings within the correctional facilities.
  • Create and implement a curriculum.
  • Ensure program consistency and that services are delivered in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Educate youth on Native American history, tradition, culture, and spiritual life classes.
  • Provide consultation services to tribal agencies, state agencies and tribal communities with a focus on prevention to at-risk Native American youth.
  • Perform, conduct, and guide cultural events at the correctional facilities.
  • Provide cultural sensitivity training to DOC staff.
  • Train DOC and school staff to deal with negative behaviors based on culture and traditional values.
  • Work closely with participating Tribes and other health and human service departments in the effective execution of goals and objectives of the program.
  • Establish, foster, and maintain professional relationship with Great Lakes Inter Tribal Council administration and relative program directors (such as Foster Grandparents Program) and DOC staff.
  • Establish, foster, and maintain professional relationship with Great Lakes Inter Tribal Council (GLITC) and DOC staff.
  • Develop necessary work plans.
  • Ensure compliance through proper monitoring and reporting.
  • Administer program budget. Collaborate with other health and human services providers to continuously improve the services provided to Native American families and to develop a strong referral network.
  • Engage in ongoing networking activities to remain current on the availability of health and human services available to Native Americans.
  • Assure that all services are delivered in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Attend all training sessions and meetings as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Additional Duties:

  • Provision of a structured, intensive one week, 20-hour program related to traditional Native American history, culture, and spirituality to be offered to selected youth on a quarterly basis.
  • Provision of a structured, intensive one week, 20-hour program related to cultural sensitivity and awareness to be offered to selected youth on a quarterly basis.
  • Provision of a general, structured program related to the traditional Native American history, culture, and spirituality available to all residents of each living unit per month.
  • Teaching traditional Native American history, culture, traditions, and spirituality to youth involved with the ITW program.
  • Provision of consult services to tribal agencies, other state agencies and prevention services to at-risk youth in the Native American community.
  • Allowance for curriculum planning, development, preparation, and acquisition of resource materials.
  • Hours of services and programming to be documented monthly and submitted to the Lincoln Hills Contract Administrator.

This is a full-time opportunity working Monday through Friday, 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, 40-45 Hours per week, with some weekends included, at the Lincoln Hills School in Irma Wisconsin. There will be times when services are required outside of these hours. A mutually agreeable schedule, actual program dates, and times shall be negotiated with the DOC Contract Administrator at Lincoln Hills School.


This position has a starting rate of $47,750 to $53,100 per year with benefits including Annual and Personal Leave and Holiday Pay, Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSA, and 401k Retirement Plan.


Qualifications: Required: Associate degree in a health and human service field. Minimum three years of experience in health and human services, with concentration on corrections; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Preferred: Work experience within a correctional facility. Knowledge of Native American history, culture, and traditions. Individual must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people; speak in front of groups. Individual must be able to apply advanced reasoning skills to problem solving and use basic mathematical skills. Must possess valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel to the central office in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.
