Star Of California is looking for Mental Health Specialists in Burbank, Ca and the surroundings areas! Under the general supervision of the Regional Clinical Manager of Developmental Services, the Mental Health Specialist (MHS) will develop and provide positive support and supplemental education for parents of children with special needs receiving Regional Center services. Clinical Responsibilities-Provide one-to-one parent education to the caregivers and the family unit-Create and assign parent education goals -Provide parent education: setting limits/boundaries, positive communication, behavior modification strategies, enhancing social/emotional development, and education regarding transition to school district services.-Help parents understand and process their child's disability and/or diagnosis, reinforce positive coping skills/stress management, facilitate the grieving process and offer support, and empower parents to advocate for and support early intervention services.-Explore strategies to build a positive parent foundation, providing education on parenting skills/strategies, provide support working as a parenting team, and facilitate improved communication and relational skills.-Provide resources in the family's local community Professional Responsibilities-Arrive at the scheduled session on time-Dress appropriately and follow the guidelines in the BLC-SSG handbook-Communicate any changes in scheduling (e.g., make-ups, cancellations) to both parents and supervisor-Follow the missed shift policy as detailed in the BLC-SSG handbook-Accept, follow, and implement directions from supervisor(s) and Regional Clinical Managers-Attend team meetings on a monthly basis-Maintain effective case load management to optimize service delivery-Complete any additional duties as assigned by supervisor(s)-Must be self-motivated, responsible, outgoing, patient and eager to learn-Exhibit good affect and display an appropriate level of energy and maintain professionalism-Abide by all BLC-SSG confidentiality standards as stated in the employee handbook Skills, Knowledge, and Ability Requirements: -Must be fluent in English and able to communicate effectively using written and verbal language-Must be in the process of completing internship, or is currently a licensed marriage and family therapist-Possess excellent time management skills and knowledge of street routes/maps-Utilize professional language (avoid slang) when conversing-Must possess the ability to communicate electronically-Must have reliable transportation and current liability insurance for the vehicle-Ability to adhere to BLC-SSG HIPAA privacy and security policies, practices, and procedures
Minimum Physical and Mental Demands: -Must stand, sit, twist, kneel, bend over, crouch down, walk, sprint (in the event of client elopement), & sit/play on the floor for extended periods of time.-Act or react to behaviors in an appropriate manner-Must be able to serve culturally and linguistically diverse families in low and high SES areas-Must be comfortable working in homes (studio apt, housing project, etc.) of families with limited resources.
Working Conditions-Working conditions are normal for an office environment and the noise level is moderately quiet. The individual is required to possess reliable transportation to and from his/her residence to clients and regional offices within the Santa Clarita Valley, Antelope Valley, and San Fernando Valley areas.
Physical Demands-While performing the duties of this position an employee is regularly required to sit for long periods; stand; talk and hear both in person and by telephone; and use hands to operate, handle, and manage multiple pieces of office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.-Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus not only to write and edit reports but to assist in the editing of those reports written by other staff members.
Mental Health Demand-While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to work on multiple concurrent tasks with constant interruptions, read and interpret documents and information; use oral communication skills; interact with staff, the general public and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied and/or abusive individuals.
