Mechanic Public Works

$24.27 - $30.55 per hour


General Purpose:

Performs semi-skilled and skilled work maintaining all vehicles and mechanical equipment of the Township. Maintains recordkeeping on maintenance of equipment.


Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works, and under the immediate supervision of the Supervisor of Public Works.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains, repairs, inspects and services all Township vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs, including welding and repainting, and preventative maintenance of any type of vehicle or piece of equipment in the Township service. Performs minor welding or auto body work.
  • Performs the duties of Chief Mechanic, temporarily, during absences.
  • Plans, carries out and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles an mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air driven tools.
  • Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
  • Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
  • Cuts and welds metal.
  • Changes and repairs tires and tubes other than large size tires.
  • Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.
  • Conducts various analysis and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most costs-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.
  • Requests equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicles and mechanical system maintenance as may be required.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
  • Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment, as required and assigned.
  • Wears appropriate safety equipment as needed.
  • Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate requirements, safety and security standards.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance as outlined on daily inspection sheets.
  • May be utilized for snow removal.
  • Performs duties as outlined in lower job classifications as required, or assigned.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Performs official state motor vehicle inspections.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

(A) High School Diploma or GED required; and demonstrated ability to perform job or duties as described.

(B) Some specialized training in automotive repair, both gasoline and diesel.

(C) Four (4) years of related experience, or

(D) Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.

(B) Ability to maintain effective preventative maintenance programs, policies and procedures; ability to maintain effective accounting records; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.

(C) Ability to handle stressful situations.


Special Requirements

(A) Valid Pennsylvania Driver's license with CDL Class A endorsement with air brake, or ability to obtain one. Employee not possessing said license at time of appointment must obtain license within 6-month time frame established between union and management.

(B) Necessary state certification to perform official state motor vehicle inspections.


Tools and Equipment

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for repairs and maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio. Electric and gas cutting and welding equipment.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and smell.


The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather

conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid, hot or cold conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.


The noise level in this work environment is loud.
