Summary

Mechanics are required to perform a range of duties and responsibilities that can differ from day to day depending on the jobs that they are assigned. This can include anything from routine maintenance work to specialized repairs and assembly/installation. These duties are to be performed within safety, quality, and production standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean machines and machine parts, using cleaning solvents, cloths, air guns, hoses, vacuums, or other equipment.
  • Collaborate with other workers to repair or move machines, machine parts, or equipment.
  • Collect and discard worn machine parts and other refuse in order to maintain machinery and work areas.
  • Dismantle machines and remove parts for repair, using hand tools, chain falls, jacks, cranes, or hoists.
  • Inspect or test damaged machine parts, and mark defective areas or advise supervisors of repair needs.
  • Install, replace, or change machine parts and attachments, according to production specifications.
  • Read work orders and specifications to determine machines and equipment requiring repair or maintenance.
  • Reassemble machines after the completion of repair or maintenance work.
  • Record production, repair, and machine maintenance information
  • Start machines and observe mechanical operation to determine efficiency and to detect problems.
  • Transport machine parts, tools, equipment, and other material between work areas and storage, using cranes, hoists, or dollies.
  • Set up and operate machines, and adjust controls to regulate operations.
  • Performs inspections to assure compliance with regulations.

Knowledge:

  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Skills:

  • Equipment Maintenance – Individual should have skills with plumbing, welding, assembly, installation of various mechanical systems and should be able to perform these skills independently.
  • Operation Monitoring - Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Repairing - Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Operation and Control - Controlling operations of equipment or systems.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent knowledge and work experience of machinery and hydraulic, basic electrical and all mechanical components.
  • Should have experience and capable of operating lifting equipment’s.

  • Visualization - The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.

Standing, stooping and squatting can be expected along with repetitive lifting or with other means transfer of tooling, parts, containers and raw materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Work on ladders at heights up to 60 feet. Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception and ability to focus.

The performance of this position normally requires exposure to a typical manufacturing areas that require the use of personal protective equipment: Steel toed shoes, Safety Glasses, PAPR, Face shield, gloves, and hearing protection.

Primary environment: Temperature of work area may be affected by outside temperatures and machining. Short term exposure of temperatures up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Industrial lighting provided.


Hazardous Waste Responsibilities for designated and trained employees in this position.

Prior to receiving 40 hour training (Note after Sept 1, 2011 all maintenance mechanic technicians performing the tasks below are required to have OSHA 40 Hour training)


  • Repairs to Bag house (Foundry Cupola bag house maintenance Technicians handle all HW generated during repairs unless the maintenance technician is OSHA 40 hr trained)
  • Inspection of 90 day and Satellite accumulation areas.
  • Universal waste collection, storage and management
  • Mechanical repairs to Cupola (Foundry Cupola bag house maintenance Technicians handle all HW generated during repairs unless the maintenance technician is OSHA 40 hr trained)

Maintenance Technicians with OSHA 40 hour training

  • Operation of Spray paint Puncturing machine
  • Movement of all hazardous waste from point of generation to 90 day accumulation area.
  • Repairs to the fly ash treatment system.
  • Cleaning up small spills of hazardous waste that occur during routine maintenance and plant activities.
