JOB TITLE: Meat Wrapper DEPARTMENT: Meat Market

PURPOSE

Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service. Has ability to recognize all varieties of fresh, smoked or frozen meat. Handles food in a safe manner and ensures neatness of department. Wraps product, rotates stock, stocks cases, and places product in the coolers and freezers.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Genuinely thanks each customer and invites them back.
  • Assists customers by: (examples include) o escorting them to the products they’re looking for o securing products that are out of reach o loading or unloading heavy items o making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests o performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answers the department telephone promptly when called upon, and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking special orders.
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Ensures appropriate stocking of fresh and smoked meat/pork/poultry cases, coolers and freezers by rotating and replenishing product.
  • Responsible for proper inventory control through handling, pricing, and stocking products.
  • Conveys customer special orders to appropriate personnel.
  • Operates an automatic wrapping and pricing machine; adjusts, cleans, oils, replenishes wrapping film as needed.
  • Operates manual wrapping machine for larger items, or items at Chopping Block. Weighs, dates, and labels manually wrapped items using department scales.
  • Keeps all areas of department organized according to “5S” standards.
  • Ensures proper merchandising of product by understanding schematics, merchandising of advertised items, proper signing procedures, and meeting customer demands.
  • Verifies and sets up prices in scales and wrapping machine according to Jewel price list.
  • Checks invoices against delivered product, places product in appropriate storage location according to “5S” standards.
  • Maintains meat display cases and assists customers with questions regarding specific meat cuts and special order requests.
  • Sets up and maintains full service meat case (Chopping Block)
  • Checks codes and removes product with expired shelf life, improperly packaged, wet or otherwise unacceptable product.
  • Replenishes stock of pre-packaged meat product in refrigerated or frozen display cases.
  • Cleans all Department utensils, equipment, merchandising tables and cases, food preparation surfaces, floors, doors, and walls according to sanitation schedule and standards.
  • Checks signage to ensure it is with the appropriate product and at the correct price.
  • Updates price changes as needed in scales, on shelves and displays.

  • Prepares and completes all daily bookwork, record keeping and documentation required by the Company,

Store Director or Market Manager.

  • Reports out-of-stock products to appropriate personnel.
  • Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat.
  • Reviews the status and appearance of product for freshness, rotating products on display for sale and in reserve areas.
  • Monitors temperatures of all display and storage units for proper holding procedures.
  • Removes trash in a timely manner.
  • Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
  • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, Safety and Sanitation regulations, and individual store guidelines.
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.
  • Ensures that all food is handled in accordance with local health department regulations.
  • Protects associates and customers by removing potential hazards from the sales floor in a timely manner.

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS: (These are considered occasional in nature)

  • Grinds, cubes, or cuts previously processed meats as requested.
  • Changes labels and reloads supplies in department.
  • Assists in other areas of store as permitted by Collective Bargaining Agreement(s).
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB: (Physical demands outlined on attached PAR sheet)

  • Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with multiple variables as they are presented.
  • The ability to work for prolonged periods of time in refrigerated and frozen levels of temperatures.
  • The ability to work in an environment with continuous high noise levels.
  • Must be able to safely operate a box cutter, meat cutting knife, cuber, wrapper, and all cleaning equipment found in the meat department.
  • Ability to do simple addition, subtraction, copying figures, counting, and recording.
  • Possess the ability to understand and follow written, verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with depth perception, color vision (ability to identify and distinguish color), and field of vision.
  • Must be able to work shifts varying in length and times, including nights, weekends and holidays.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The duties for this position are normally conducted in a store environment. Exposure to approximately 28 degrees
Fahrenheit while handling products in cooler and -20 degrees Fahrenheit while handling products in the freezer.
This position is exposed daily to a variety of sharp objects, cross contamination hazards, excessive noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, cleaning chemicals/solvents. There is significant responsibility to maintain customer service levels and handle multiple priorities.

EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM JOB:

Box cutter, pallet jack, stock cart, cuber, meat grinder, scales, wrapper, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, trimming knife, pallet jack, forklift, box cutter, SPA gun, power pallet jack, meat tray rack, stocking carts, telephone/intercom.
