Buder Part Time Materials Assistant

St. Louis Public Library's Buder Library has an opening for a part-time Materials Assistant. We are a busy location in the St. Louis Public Library system serving several diverse neighborhoods. Our ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable working with the public and is enthusiastic, patient, and committed to providing excellent customer service.


In this role you will:
  • Shelve all Library materials in the proper location according to priority.
  • Straighten materials on the shelves to ensure consistency and attractiveness.
  • Review material placement to identify potential shelving errors.
  • Search for abandoned materials to add to the book truck or proper location.
  • Assist customers with location questions.
  • Maintain assigned sections through regular shelf-reading and shifting.
  • Complete pull item lists and retrieve materials as assigned.
  • Assist in processing holds and incoming deliveries.
  • Communicate areas of concern to supervisors for further maintenance.
  • Package items into envelopes and/or bins for outgoing delivery.
  • Monitor book drop area for material returns..


You will need to be:
  • Able to arrange items in a certain order according to a specific set of rules.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledgeable about the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Skilled to recognize differences in detail.
  • Able to learn Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Gmail)


You will need to have:

  • No prior experience or training, however, previous library volunteer experience is a plus.

You will earn:

  • Competitive starting pay of $12 per hour.

Hours for this position are:

Sundays from 1-5, weekday evenings, flexible shifts.

About Buder Library:
  • Originally built in 1922. Buder Library has moved twice since its original location.
  • 40,000 square feet
  • Offers public services on four levels
  • Collection size is 80,000 (includes juvenile and adult materials)
  • 1 computer lab (holds 16 computers and one copier)
  • 3 meeting rooms (one auditorium, one smaller conference room, and a multipurpose room)

Buder is part of the St. Louis Hills neighborhood, a dynamic and busy neighborhood situated in the southwest area of St. Louis. In 2018, Buder celebrated its 20-year anniversary in the current location which is surrounded by a thriving retail scene as well as numerous restaurants. The neighborhood is very family oriented with a large number of families with young children, a strong Bosnian community and an increasingly multicultural population.
