Managing Director of People Operations
Equitas Academy provides a structured, achievement-based community that prepares students to graduate from four year colleges and universities. We currently operate four Elementary Schools and two Middle Schools, with more schools opening in the near future.

The Managing Director, People Operations (MDPO) will set the strategic vision for and manage all human resource and talent operations to ensure Equitas is an efficient, competitive, legally compliant, safe, and inspiring place to work.

Opportunity
Reporting to the Chief Talent Officer (CTO), the Managing Director, People Operations will oversee compensation & rewards, learning & development, performance management, employee relations, and compliance. They will also partner with members of the Talent Team and key stakeholders to build exceptional people management practices and ensure a strong, inclusive, and people-first work culture. The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator, relationship builder, community advocate, and hold a high standard of integrity.

Essential Responsibilities - Human Resource Operations & Compliance

  • Develop and implement a people-centered vision for all aspects of human resource functions including compensation & rewards, learning & development, performance management, employee relations, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with the CTO and the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Anti-Racism to embed an anti-racist, equity lens into organizational systems, structures, policies, and practices.
  • Design and manage a comprehensive role-aligned performance evaluation process including the implementation of performance improvement plans.
  • Identify training needs and partner with the Talent Team to deliver best-in-class professional development opportunities across the organization.
  • Ensure that Equitas Academy complies with federal, state, and local workplace labor laws, training, certification, health clearance, and various reporting requirements.
  • Review and update personnel policies and make recommendations for change to the employee handbook as needed to ensure adherence to statutory and mandatory requirements as well as alignment with organizational culture and values.
  • Oversee personnel record keeping and data tracking, and background checking related to new hires and employees, including but not limited to reviews, promotions, complaints, separations, benefits, worker’s compensation claims, leaves of absence, credentialing, and exit interviews.
  • Oversee annual Assignment Monitoring through the California Statewide Assignment Accountability System (CalSAAS) for our six schools, ensuring all credentialed staff hold the credential appropriate to their assignment and facilitate the appropriate use, documentation, and Board Approval Process of California Ed Codes (EC) in order to assign credentialed teachers to serve in authorized subject-matter areas.
  • Work with our Operations and Compliance Team to prepare all credential information for annual oversight visits and ESSA grid submissions.
  • Submit requests to the Los Angeles County Education Office (LACOE) for Temporary County Certificates (TCCs) for staff with applications pending with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Essential Responsibilities - Compensation & Benefits Management

  • Manage and negotiate employee benefit programs and external relationships for all plans including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, worker’s compensation, supplemental 403b, Flexible Spending Plans, short-term leave of absence processing, and unemployment compensation.
  • Create and manage salary ranges for positions to support internal equity across functions and alignment with market pay.
  • Review and revise compensation strategy on a bi-annual basis to meet budget requirements and support staff retention.
  • Ensure all local, State, and National ordinances are reflected in benefits offering and administration and manage the open enrollment process.
  • Analyze talent data and utilize insights to drive retention of high-performing team members through rewards, recognition, and other data-informed incentives.

Essential Responsibilities - Employee Relations

  • Drive processes and monitor systems for gathering employee feedback and addressing employee concerns.
  • Manage employee investigations, respond to all complaints, and complete all necessary follow-up in a timely manner.
  • Coach and advise supervisors in best practices, strategies, and policies for addressing employee issues.
  • Oversee all aspects of separations including working with supervisors and staff to complete process and procedures in compliance with all applicable state and federal law.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Committed to Equitas’ mission of providing a structured, achievement-based community that prepares students to graduate from four-year colleges and universities
  • 7+ years of experience in strategic HR management
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree with an emphasis in human resources, business, or a related field or equivalent professional certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) preferred
  • Strong fundamental understanding of general talent management in K-12 settings, charter management organizations, and/or non-profit settings
  • Demonstrated success in leading high-impact, complex projects
  • Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to track and synthesize data
  • Skilled at developing meaningful connections and relationships with team members
  • Collaborative decision-making style, with a proven track record of working effectively with diverse stakeholders to meet goals and drive results
  • Effective at demonstrating empathy, listening for understanding, and facilitating uplifting and difficult conversations
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and oral)
  • Must be able to pass a TB test and background check at the time of offer

Salary
Salary for this position is $109,000-$150,000, based on experience.
