About the Department

The University of Chicago Genomics Facility offers researchers assistance with experiments in the areas of Single-Cell Genomics (currently operating 10X Genomics equipment, a NanoString GeoMx instrument, a Takara iCell8, a MissionBio Tapestri and expanding continuously), Micro-arrays (Illumina Infinium), Next-Generation Sequencing (Illumina NovaSEQ, NextSEQ and MiSEQ) as well as Sanger Sequencing. The Facility is well-supported by the Dean’s office and fulfills an essential role in the continued academic success of the University of Chicago.

Job Summary

The University of Chicago Genomics Facility (FGF) is currently looking for a talented individual to function as the Manager of the Sanger Sequencing sub-unit of the FGF. The Sanger Sequencing sub-unit of the Genomics Facility has existed for 20-plus years and offers a set of well-defined services, ranging from sequencing client provided DNA templates to performing plasmid preps on client provided colony plates and moving these DNA templates forward to sequencing. The manager of the Sanger Sequencing sub-unit will report to the Genomics Facility Technical Director. The job manages scientific research projects or scientific research facilities. Uses considerable on-the-job experience to ensure compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies. Works independently to write articles, reports and manuscripts, and presents research findings at meetings and/or conferences.
Responsibilities
The Sanger Sequencing FGF subunit performs a set of well-defined operational procedures, fully utilizing the capabilities of the existing Applied BioSystems (AB3730xl) equipment. Within the context of these procedures the Manager of Sanger Sequencing will:
  • Interact with end-users on long-range plans for their research projects, setting the appropriate time-line expectations for moving samples through the Sanger Sequencing Facility.
  • Supervise Sanger Sequencing employees on a daily basis and set work-schedules.
  • Ensure compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates.
Additional responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: operating Sanger Sequencing equipment, assisting and interacting with core users, and performing general lab duties as needed.
Essential Functions:
  • 80% - Participate in moving Sanger Sequencing samples through the established operational pipe-lines of the Facility (processing intake documents, setting up Sanger Sequencing reactions, loading samples on Sequencing equipment).
  • 10% - Process the Sanger Sequencing data and provide to end-users (explain data quality issues when needed and provide suggestions on how to improve data quality for future samples).
  • 10% - Perform Core administrative functions related to personnel supervision and training as well as vendor interactions. Order reagents as needed.
  • Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Works independently to assist with project design.
  • Solves complex problems relating to the administration of projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:
  • MS or PhD in Biology or another field related to Genomics research.
Experience:
  • Prior experience in a Genomics Facility setting including experience with Sanger Sequencing.
  • Manager in a Genomics Facility setting is strongly preferred.
