About the Community Engagement Team:

The Community Engagement team develops accessible and inclusive community-engaged practices both within the Education department and the Museum as a whole. The Community Engagement team believes that art allows for new and old friends, families, and neighbors to connect while creating experiences that reflect our shared values for all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Community Engagement prioritizes relationship-building with a commitment to uplifting different perspectives through innovative, fun, and responsive programs that echo the audience’s interests and empower their creative voice. All teams work closely with colleagues in Curatorial, Exhibitions and Interpretation, Development, and Marketing and Communications to realize the museum’s mission.

Scope of the Position:

The Manager of Community Programs is responsible for planning and implementing unique, engaging program content that increases equitable access to the arts in the Dallas area through relevant and responsive experiences created in collaboration with community members and organizations in alignment with the Museum’s mission and strategic objectives. Programs range from large events to smaller multi-session series supporting people of all ages.

In addition to leading community programming, the Manager of Community Programs also shares insights learned through reflective practices with colleagues across the CE team to help propel our collective work forward and plays a central role in crafting the vision for community-engaged planning across the Education department. Examples include facilitating community listening sessions supporting program and resource development, advising on community-engaged program planning, and helping identify community members and organizations to include in this work.

Through close collaboration with the Director of Community Engagement, the Manager sets measurable goals and outcomes, aligns activities accordingly, and establishes tools and systems that gauge program impact and foster continuous success. The Manager advocates for community engagement to be embedded within the fabric of the DMA’s work museum-wide and serves as an advocate for the Museum locally, regionally, and nationally with a high degree of integrity and professionalism.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Director of Community Engagement to design, develop, and implement the vision for Community Programs and community-engaged program planning throughout the department in alignment with the overall mission of the Museum, the Education Division, and Community Engagement team.
  • In consultation with the Director of Community Engagement, the Manager establishes clear and measurable program goals, outcomes, and evaluation strategies to adequately assess program impact and relevancy.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Community Engagement, maintains relationships with current community partners and strategically seeks out new partnerships; ensures that these relationships are continuing to evolve based on the needs of their audiences. Manages this list of partners as a resource accessible to other departments.
  • Collaborates with community members and organizations to develop and implement programs that are relevant and responsive to the needs and interests of the participants.
  • Recruits and maintains a diverse pool of volunteers and guest artists to assist with community programming; oversees volunteers and guest artists in delivering program content either on-site or off-site at participating venues.
  • Creates content for on and off-site community programs; serves as DMA lead educator at off-site programs or works closely as main point of contact for partners when volunteers or guest artists must deliver content without DMA staff representatives present.
  • Creates lesson plans, coordinates supply orders, and directs and assesses teaching methods of volunteers and guest artist teaching staff.
  • Ensures that program curricula incorporates principles of Universal Design and multi-modal educational approaches.
  • Supervises and mentors interns as opportunities arise.
  • Maintains all budgets specific to Community Programming.
  • Demonstrates leadership as a participant of the Education team, contributing during Community Engagement team meetings, department wide meetings, and strategic initiative meetings.
  • As appropriate, consults with other departments on ways to reach new audiences. This might include collaborating with Marketing and Communications, Exhibitions and Interpretation, and Curatorial to develop innovative approaches to interact with community partners and the DFW community at large.
  • Maintains knowledge of recent developments in the field by attending conferences, visiting museums to observe best practices, and communicating with regional and national colleagues.
  • Contributes in-gallery support in C3 as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education, Experience, and Certification:*

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Art, Art History, Museum Education, Education, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a formal or informal learning environment, with experience creating developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive content for a variety of audiences and age groups.
  • Experience managing a team preferred.
  • Ability to create and deliver educational content in Spanish preferred.

  • Knowledge of best practices in asset-based community development, community engagement, and/or museum education.
  • Ability to develop strategic, mutually beneficial partnerships with artists, community organizations, cultural institutions, and colleagues throughout the Museum.
  • Knowledge of Dallas neighborhoods, community organizations, and demographics preferred.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Ability to be an enthusiastic spokesperson for the Museum’s educational and programming efforts.
  • Ability to prioritize and navigate workload in response to departmental needs. Excellent written, organizational, interpersonal, speaking, and computer skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support program commitments.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license (or ability to secure one) and ability to drive the DMA’s Go van Gogh van to programming sites.
  • Ability to provide own transportation to programming sites as needed based on DMA’s Go van Gogh van availability.
