Gilman School seeks a dynamic educator to lead all aspects of the K-5 woodworking program. This is a unique opportunity for a collaborative and forward-thinking teacher to build upon the School’s strong tradition of fabricating projects with wood and metal with the possibility of exploring ways to incorporate the arts, technology, and other STEM-related programs into the curriculum. The ideal candidate will have prior success with woodworking, and if not experienced in STEM programs and curriculum design, a vested interest in exploring these opportunities. With the future direction of the overall PK-12 design & woodworking program involving more cross-disciplinary efforts, this person will work with a team of educators on school-wide programming while developing and articulating a vision for a future design center.
Responsibilities will include:
- Working collaboratively on K-5 woodworking program that is cross-disciplinary and supports the teaching of Gilman Skills
- Overseeing the daily operation of the Lower School Design & Woodworking Shop, including academic and co-curricular programming, scheduling, inventory, maintenance, and repairs
- Ensuring the safety of all students, faculty, and staff in this space
- Teaching classes for students in grade K-5
- Involving her/himself in the overall life of the School
A qualified candidate will demonstrate:
- Significant experience in and passion for woodworking
- Competence in teaching woodworking to students in grades K-5
- Advancing the community’s efforts to be diverse, inclusive, and equitable
- Interest in and enthusiasm for boys’ education
- Ability to work closely, responsively, and collaboratively with others
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
