Position Information

New Hanover County Public Library seeks a customer-focused, team-oriented hourly part-time Library Assistant at the downtown library. The position works varying schedules with flex hours each week to meet the needs of the location, including alternating weekend shifts. Minimum of 8 hours with potential for up to 19 hours per week. The hours include weekday, night, and weekend shifts. Casual part-time workers may pick up additional shifts as available but may not work more than 19 hours per week.

As the primary point of contact for library services, the position requires extensive interaction with customers and co-workers at a public desk. Position expectations include, but are not limited to:


  • Connecting New Hanover County’s diverse residents to the informational and enrichment services the library offers
  • Guiding visitors of all ages in the effective use of the library collection, facilities, and services
  • Assisting patrons with registration and checkout
  • Providing support in downloading e-content
  • Operating and troubleshooting self-check machines, printers, computers, and other library equipment
  • Recommending and locating appropriate print and online content to meet individual needs
Hours: varying schedule with flex hours each week to meet the needs of the location. Libraries are open M-Th 10-7; Fri-Sat 10-5; Sun 1-5.

Hours:
Varying schedule with flex hours each week to meet the needs of the location up to 19 hours a week. Libraries are open Monday - Thursday at 10am - 7pm; Friday - Saturday at 10am - 5pm; Sunday at 1pm - 5pm.

Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.

Employment Type:
Casual Part Time, non-exempt

Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position starts at $16.3500/hr. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:


  • An Associate Degree and one year of retail, library, or other frontline customer service experience. Alternatively, individuals may possess training and experience equivalent to the above, as well as demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of a Library Assistant.

Required Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency using computer technology
  • Ability to communicate in positive, inclusive terms with all people
  • Flexibility and willingness to adjust to a constantly changing work environment.
Physical activities and demands:
  • Spends up to several hours a day in a stationary position to assist customers
  • Frequently moves and positions bins of books which weigh up to 30 pounds
  • Frequently transports large numbers of books to various locations in the building
  • Positions, places, and removes books and other library materials around, onto, and from shelves at a wide range of heights
  • Communicates and exchanges information and ideas with customers and coworkers throughout the workday
  • Operates a computer, cash register, and other electronic devices throughout the day
