POSITION SUMMARY

Assists in keeping the districts vehicles and busses in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational programs. Supervises mechanics in various locations.

  • Supervises the work assignments, schedules and work quality of garage staff in accordance with labor budgets assigned by the Agency on an annual basis.
  • Prepares monthly reports of benchmark data to Transportation Administration to advise them on the status of garage operations and the entire transportation fleet.
  • Implements efficiency initiatives that will make garage staff and the transportation department more efficient.
  • Stays current with industry standards and trends regarding the diagnoses and repair/build on all vehicle systems as well as school bus laws and regulations.
  • Implement and maintain a system of preventative fleet maintenance. Prepares and audits the preventive maintenance system for transportation and maintenance vehicles and maintains related records and reports on vehicle maintenance operations.
  • Implements and maintains a system of inventory management and control.
  • Preforms all essential functions of garage staff including, but not limited to:
  • Accomplishes engine testing using specialized equipment.
  • Performs road testing to determine road-worthiness.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge and ability to repair components on all systems, including the ability to operate shop equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting and repairs on district vehicles.
  • Designs and promotes high standards of shop safety in accordance with State and Federal OSHA guidelines.
  • Reports any and all unsafe and hazardous conditions.
  • Estimates time and material costs for repair and maintenance functions and verifies completion timelines are appropriate.
  • Provides on-the-job training for mechanic trades personnel and bus drivers when requested.
  • Prepares the bus/vehicle bid specifications as requested by the Agency.
  • Recommends replacement of equipment and materials for the department.
  • Performs acceptance inspections of all new vehicles to ensure that they meet the district’s specifications.
  • Travels to local district bus garages for supervision of mechanics.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.


CERTIFICATIONS, LISCENSES OR REGISTRATIONS

  • Master ASE Certification preferred.
  • State Master Heavy Duty Truck Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License with a CDL-BPS License or ability to obtain within 60 days


EDUCATION
and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree and experience as a school bus driver are preferred.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Five years of experience working in a heavy vehicle garage.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before parents, staff and students.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear. The employee is frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop, or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses had strength to grasp tools. The employee much frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as bus parts and chemical containers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical buses and equipment. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gases fumes, and sprays. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee must be able to meet the deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud.


The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.
