The Lead Groundworker is responsible for maintaining the campus lawns and landscape; provides support in the planning, assigning, and directing work of grounds staff employees. Operates small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment.

Reporting to the Grounds Manager, ensure an aesthetically pleasing, safe, and clean University environment. May drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties. This position requires the ability to respond to emergency needs, be on a call-back capacity and required to work weekends on occasion.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Leads and performs a wide variety of skilled lawn and landscape services throughout the university.
  • Assists with the planning, assigning, and directing work of grounds staff employees and student workers; may participate in interviews, assist with training, provides feedback on staff performance appraisal, and may address complaints/resolve problems in absence of the Grounds Manager.
  • Maintains campus turf areas by irrigation, mowing, weed-whipping grass and sidewalk areas and edging borders to proper depth.
  • Prepares areas, lays sod and sows seed.
  • Aerates and irrigates turf to enhance turf growth.
  • Picks up litter and garbage to enhance campus appearance including manicuring of grounds before special events.
  • Cleans up clogged catch basins and roof gutters.
  • Maintains trees, shrubs, and hedges by planting, pruning, trimming, watering, spraying and weeding.
  • Cleans ground cover and shrub plantings including the removal of volunteer plants, trimming off suckers and dead flower stalks and periodically applying fertilizer and pesticides.
  • Repairs asphalt driveways and dig trenches using mechanized trenching machine or by shovel.
  • Safely operates a variety of equipment used in grounds maintenance such as ride on mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, dump trucks, lifts, and trenchers; operates a variety of power and hand tools such as line trimmers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and chain saws.
  • Reports unsafe conditions observed or encountered while completing assigned work.
  • Cleans Grounds Shop and equipment as needed.
  • Follows all safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
  • Maintains department confidence and safeguards operations by keeping information confidential; adheres to all safety and University policies and procedures.
  • In the absence of the Grounds Manager, responsible for the supervision of the Grounds Shop personnel.
  • Performs related duties or special projects as needed or directed.

Qualification Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas, general grounds maintenance work or related work.
  • One year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is required.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of commercial lawn and landscaping maintenance techniques, methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of lawn and landscaping maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Safety rules, regulations, and procedure for grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain all lawn and landscape maintenance equipment and report any issues.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and detail orientated.
  • Ability to work as a team and independently and with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Follow appropriate safety rules and regulation.
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers and personal computer software and applications.
  • Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology.
  • Ability to recommend appropriate courses of action within established guidelines.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Understand, interpret, explain, and apply applicable federal and state policies and laws.
  • Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives.
  • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Working Conditions:

Hours and work schedule may vary according to the needs of the University. Weekend work and after-hours emergency response may be required.

Physical Demands:

Incumbents regularly stand and walks for long periods of time; speak clearly and distinctly to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; walk on a regular basis; travel to various locations; finger dexterity may be required to utilize and operate the specialized tools and equipment; distinguish colors and have depth perception; reach with hands and arms; pushing, pulling lifting and occasional crawling; stoop or kneel or crouch; ascend/descent ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps and/or poles; and lift, carry and/or move objects typically weighing up to 10-25 pounds and on occasion up to 50 pounds. There may be exposure to inclement weather as well as to dirt/dust, chemicals/solvents, and noise with occasional exposure to temperature extremes and vibrations.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. The University will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK: Possession of a valid Driver's License is required for certain positions. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
