Characteristics of the Class: Under direction of the Director of Planning and Development, performs professional duties in conjunction with other professional disciplines in the development and implementation of all project planning on the Lakefront.

Examples of Duties: Coordinates, develops, oversees, and implements, all development and project planning on the Lakefront including hiring and managing consultants/designers, reviewing and approving drawings and specifications, interacting with and maintaining relationships with approving agencies such as the Army Corps of Engineers, state and local Departments of Transportation, local Department of Planning and Department of Buildings. Is responsible for projects from start to finish, including insuring that all projects comply with the Lakefront Protection Ordinance through the Chicago Plan Commission and other regulatory agencies. Is responsible for community interaction and public input, developing and executing framework plans, budgeting, and coordination with other governmental agencies. Interacts, plans, and completes projects with other city agencies including the Department of Transportation, the Department of Environment, the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, and the Department of Aviation. Project assignments include, but are not limited to: the relocation of DuSable Lakeshore Drive, the Chicago Shoreline Protection Project, the Buckingham Fountain pavilions, the review and development of shoreline improvements such as beach houses, concessions, trails, and comfort stations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Training and Experience:
Bachelors degree and a minimum of five years practical experience, including experience with matters that involve the management of coastal properties, experience with Lakefront Protection Ordinance and/or the Chicago Plan Commission a plus, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A graduate degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Engineering or related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of professional research and data gathering practices, evaluation techniques, trend analysis, and policy planning.
Knowledge of regulations and standards of various applicable agencies, especially shoreline or lakefront related.
Knowledge of organizational management principles and managing outside consultants.
Ability to interact and communicate constructively with other disciplines, employees, and other agencies and organizations.
Ability to plan, prepare, and control budget for extensive operations. Skill in drafting and in application of planning methods.
