About the Opportunity
The City of Asheville Invites Qualified Applicants for the position of Temporary Laborer - Facility Attendant at the Western North Carolina Nature Center within the Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities Department. The purpose of this position is to contribute to the overall success of the WNC Nature Center by undertaking and assisting with projects related to the maintenance, organization, and cleanliness of the facility.

Rate of pay
: $17.70
Schedule: This is a temporary year round position. This is a time limited position not to exceed 1,000 hours per year. The schedule will vary and can be flexible base on the applicant, but will include weekends as well as several days out of the week.

This is a temporary/seasonal position and will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday), or participation in the retirement system.

Initial review of applications will occur on 05/18/2023. This position will remain open until the closing date listed or until a sufficient number of applications are received.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums and/or buffs floor surfaces.
  • Cleans restroom and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork and/or light fixtures.
  • Empties trash receptacles.
  • Help with Landscaping. Including weed eating, mulching, pulling weeds, cleaning up leaves
  • Provides support for the maintenance team on various projects
  • Performs overall daily cleaning and maintenance of the inside and outside of assigned parks and recreation areas.
  • Provides customer service by answering questions and giving information and directions.
  • Reports large facility maintenance issues to managers.
  • Performs back up duties in the absence of other personnel.

Supplemental Functions:
Performs other similar duties as required.

Education & Experience

Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Basic knowledge of custodial responsibilities and customer service with some related experience preferred.

Specific License or Certification Required:
Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • None required.

Knowledge:
  • Working knowledge of cleaning procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the layout of assigned buildings and facilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Skills:
  • Ability to read and understand workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks.
  • Ability to bring resources together to resolve a problem or provide a solution.

ADA Compliance:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, or disease.
