Laboratory Technician

6 month contract

$19.50/hr

Education: This job requires a minimum of a BS degree in chemistry or a related field. Higher education levels may reduce experience requirements below.
Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of full time working experience in chemical and/or analytical laboratories. Successfully completed collegiate course work in chemistry (grade of C or better, two (2) semesters minimum) can reduce the minimum work history requirement.
Physical Demands: Climb stairways and ladder. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. repeatedly.
Mental/Visual Demands: Must be able to sustain normal mental attention throughout work time and to keep overview in difficult situations. Normal corrected hearing and good corrected vision is required. Must be able to multitask.
Working Conditions: Exposed to noise, dust, wet floors, seasonal heat and cold. This position may require exposure to hazardous chemicals. Appropriate training will be given to comply with federal regulations regarding hazardous waste exposure and/or handling. Must wear safety shoes, hard hat, safety glasses and other protective equipment that might be plant or area specific. All required PPE is supplied by company.

General Function and Scope

Perform necessary raw material, manufactured product & trading goods inspection and testing procedures, assist in calibration of lab and in plant measuring equipment, initiate non-conforming material reports and assist in performance of quality record functions. Assist in writing procedures and training of the Plant Quality Control group personnel (e.g. analytical methods) as specified by Lab Supervision.

Principal Duties:

1. Test and/or review raw materials, manufactured products and trading goods in accordance with required schedules and procedures to ensure materials are within specification.
2. Assist in obtaining samples and perform in-process analyses and recommend product adjustment amounts to manufacturing.
3. Assist in weighing/measuring chain regulators, catalysts and other in-process adjustment chemicals.
4. Record all pertinent test results on data collectors and file, complete and electronically store CoAs, release approved lots from SAP.
Keep shift supervision informed about the status of assigned work, and immediately alert shift supervision to any problem preventing timely completion of same.
Assist in laboratory and plant operational cross training of the Plant Quality Control group. Ensure all personal laboratory safety equipment conforms to specifications in the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
5. Assist in preparation of analytical procedures, calibration procedures, and quality plans as specified by Supervision.
6. Assist in performing aspects of document control and quality record storage that are assigned by Supervision.
7. Initiate Non-Conforming Material Reports when analysis indicates an out-of-specification condition.
8. Help organize relief of Plant Quality Control or Sample Dept personnel in the event of absence due to vacation, sickness, etc..
9. Adhere to all aspects of Responsible Care®.

Responsibility for Errors: If errors are made, rework of product(s) is highly possible and efforts to correct errors are significant.

Complexity of duties: Job duties require ability to perform and train others to perform tasks of some complexity (e.g. analytical equipment, analytical methods and procedures, statistical methods, chemistry of products).
Confidential Data: Job requires knowledge of matters very important to the company’s economic performance. These must be kept absolutely secret.
Supervision Received: Standard procedures enable the employee to proceed alone on regular duties referring questionable situations to Plant Supervision. Normal judgment required in determining problems and taking action.
Contact with others: Job requires some contact with persons and organizations internal to the company.
Special Skills/Training: Job requires some special skills (e.g. computer spread sheet and word processing).
Some test equipment skills may be required (e.g. HPLC, GPC techniques, some wet chemistry analytical techniques, trainable in others).
