The Laboratory Manager is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the COLA accredited moderate complex laboratory. The lab manager will assist in the supervision and planning of how services are delivered and contribute to the process of strategic planning, influencing, and responding to organizational priorities in conjunction with the Medical Lab Director, Clinical Operations Directors, and other leaders within the organization. The Laboratory Manager will be instrumental in transforming the moderate complex lab to serve all patients of MAHEC.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management of Laboratory:
  • Participates in a safety control program to ensure the laboratory remains in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations, including provision of:
    • COLA and CLIA regulations
    • Annual OSHA training
    • Appropriate PPE
    • Corrective action when needed
  • Trains all laboratory staff and provides regular in-servicing.
  • Evaluates staff performance and competency.
  • Maintains HIPAA compliance.
  • Management of supplies, including PAR levels.
  • Monitors specimen testing to ensure that acceptable levels of pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic performance are maintained.
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance characteristics.
  • Participates in a Proficiency Testing program.
  • Directs a Quality Control program.
  • Directs a Quality Assurance program.
  • Creates new policies and procedures in accordance with CLIA and COLA standards.
  • Serves as a resource for residents, faculty and other learners for appropriate test ordering.
  • Ensures that the laboratory is cleaned/sanitized and orderly manner.
  • Ensures all instrumentation/equipment is functioning properly.
  • Assumes an active role in quality improvement in the laboratory.
  • Evaluates new products for accuracy, specificity, cost, and collaborates with key stakeholders prior to implementation.
  • Collaborates with all partnered reference labs.
  • Coordinates with the Division of OB and Psychiatry to collaborate and integrate processes, equipment, policies, procedures and patient services
  • Monitors the quality and accuracy of lab test ordering, performing, and resulting and identifies areas for quality improvement.
Laboratory Operation:
  • Collects and processes laboratory specimens.
  • Processes specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
  • Generates lab requisitions and labels from the EHR.
  • Instructs patients on proper specimen collection procedures.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on lab equipment as required.
  • Performs all testing.
  • Performs daily quality control.
  • Cleans and restocks laboratory and monitors supplies.
  • Manages staff assignments and payroll.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor degree in a lab science or a degree in Medical Technology from an accredited institution. At least two years of laboratory management is required. Phlebotomy skills for patients of all ages required. Experience with drafting policies in accordance with regulatory standards required.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Electronic health record and laboratory information system experience required.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Spanish language skills preferred.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Clinical Operations Director of the Family Medicine Division
Receives direction from Chief Clinical Officer
