K-12 Health Teacher


DESCRIPTION:

The Everett Public Schools is seeking a passionate, dedicated, and motivated educator to teach skills-based health education in grades K-12. The position will be split between the Webster K-5 elementary school and the Devens K-12 school. The Devens school is a co-educational therapeutic day school, serving students ages 5-22 who have been identified as eligible for special education services and whose educational needs are primarily the result of significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Education and/or Liberal Arts
  • Massachusetts Teaching Licensure in Health/Family & Consumer Science
  • SEI Endorsement
  • Knowledge and experience in special education teaching students whose primary disability is severe social/emotional or behavioral challenges
  • Working knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations and procedures
  • Knowledge of standards-based instruction
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, health care professionals, and administrators
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students with an emphasis on building strengths that students bring to the teaching/learning process
  • Demonstrated energy and enthusiasm for health education and teaching
  • Ability to collect, interpret, and disseminate data to teachers in order to improve instruction and learning.


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience working in an urban public school setting
  • Language proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or French
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Strong collaboration skills


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • K-8 Health teachers are responsible for utilizing district-adopted curriculum, as well as other research-based instructional tools, to teach health-related concepts, skills, and strategies to students in grades K-8
  • Teachers must exercise culturally responsive practices to promote equity and respect for all students
  • Plan and facilitate Health lessons for K-8 students that are aligned with State Frameworks and National Health Education Standards
  • Teach skills necessary to provide understanding and appreciation of health and wellness
  • Collaborate and co-plan with grade level teachers and districtwide Health teachers to provide the highest quality instruction and support for students
  • Adapt the Health curriculum and differentiate instruction, by using scaffolded instructional material, inclusive practices and SEI strategies, to meet the needs of all students
  • Use all available technology and virtual curricula provided by the district to create engaging lessons and supports that are linked with 21st Century skills and remote accessibility
  • Manage classroom behavior with strategies that motivate students and limit disruptions
  • Incorporate Social Emotional Learning standards and curriculum that promote self-confidence, team-building and informed decision making
  • Provide a clean, safe and nurturing classroom environment
  • Communicate with student families on a regular basis using culturally responsive strategies that promote two-way conversations
  • Employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development that is relevant to the challenges of urban education in order to close opportunity gaps
  • Collaborate with guidance counselors to refer students who are in need of Social Emotional support
  • Collaborate with Special Education leadership and teacher colleagues to review IEPs and ensure all accommodations are properly and consistently delivered
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives and events which may be assigned by the district Health Coordinator, Principal and Assistant Principal


Salary:

Salary for this position will be in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Everett School Committee and the Everett Teachers Association.
