DEFINITION

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, coordinates, and administers inmate education, vocational, and social service programs; conducts interviews and assessments for placement of program participants; evaluates projects and sites; plans, estimates, and secures supplies, equipment, and materials for projects; fosters cooperative working relationships with various public and private groups; and performs related duties as assigned.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from assigned Jail Sergeant. May provide technical and functional direction to assigned staff.


CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a fully competent classification responsible for developing, coordinating, modifying, and implementing jail inmate programs including education, vocational, work, and social services referral programs. Responsibilities include working with other County departments and external agencies to identify opportunities for programs and projects; procuring resources; interviewing and conducting placement assessments of inmates; ensuring compliance with applicable department and County policies and procedures; and maintaining records and reporting statistics related to the program.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be


Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, rehabilitation, social work, or a related field and two (2) years of counseling or assessment experience in some or all of the following areas: vocational rehabilitation, education counseling, and/or drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Experience working within field of adult or juvenile corrections is preferred.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
