Instructional Designer and Technologist

The George Mason University, School of Business, invites applications for the position of Instructional Designer and Technologist . This position is responsible for assisting the School of Business in using technology to support excellence in learning and teaching. This is a full-time administrative faculty position with full benefits.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Develop and Support Teaching with Technology:
  • Assist and support faculty in the development of appropriate online teaching and learning strategies. Work with faculty teaching face to face, blended and fully online courses to enhance instruction through the use of synchronous and asynchronous delivery approaches.
  • Develop and provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, multimedia and graphic elements, use of assessments, and design of course materials and activities. Provide curriculum design advice and expertise to faculty in the evaluation and implementation of software and online tools to meet user needs.
  • Provide individual course support to instructional faculty teaching in an online environment. Work with faculty throughout the course development process, to include support in the design, set up, and delivery of new courses, as well as provision of post course assessment, leading to revision and enhancement of resources and course delivery.
  • Be available to address urgent faculty LMS issues on weekends. Support faculty in the setup and management of tests and exams within a learning management system (LMS), particularly during mid-term and end of term assessment periods.
  • Keep abreast of the latest instructional technologies that may benefit student learning (e.g., lecture recording systems, online tools from textbook publishers).
  • Skills in the use of HTML, familiarity with basic video editing and design for accessibility.


Quality Assurance:
  • Ensure online courses are ready prior to courses going “live”. Assist faculty with formative course reviews prior to the launch of new courses, and with summative reviews and course improvement after the launch period.
  • Assess the effectiveness of instruction through surveys and/or other methods. Work with program administration to develop a methodology and tools for course assessment, so as to provide support to faculty in refining their course plans, and to foster greater consistency of design and effectiveness across programs and courses.

Develop and Provide Training:
  • Create training resources and job aides for faculty. Hold faculty development one-on-one and workshops on the application of key learning technologies (e.g., LMS, survey software, video-conferencing,).
  • Collaborate with the University’s Learning Support Services and with the Stearns Center to share best practices and stay informed regarding university-adopted technologies.
  • Seek input from faculty, staff, and administrators on emerging needs and developing solutions.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in education, instructional technology, educational media instructional systems design or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated professional work experience providing instructional design support in best practices for teaching (face to face, blended, full distance/online delivery) and designing instructional materials.
  • Demonstrated success in an academic or training environment in the development of instructional projects using multimedia applications, emerging technologies, and/or distributed/distance technologies.
  • Ability to work with staff and faculty to develop face-to-face, blended, and fully online courses.
  • Skill in collaborating with subject matter experts, to provide design and technical expertise, in a partnership of mutual respect.
  • Knowledgeable in the use or support of users in a learning management system. Skilled at the integration of learning content and outside educational resources.
  • Knowledgeable practitioner in development of online learning environments, websites, visual presentations, online communities, and online collaboration tools. Ability to source/create dynamic content to ensure learners remain engaged and courses see minimal attrition. (e.g., Articulate 360, Rise 360, Adobe Captivate, H5P).
  • Conversant in new and emerging technologies to support learning.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated high degree of independence and initiative.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience producing and recording live lecture events.
  • Ability to apply performance and other key learning data to course re-design and quality assurance. Knowledge of reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, etc.
  • Experience with basic HTML5 and Adobe creative cloud.
  • Experience in higher education setting and ability to work in a university environment.
  • Experience leading technical training and workshops.
