The apprentices are technically skilled associates and are training to become an industrial refrigeration technician with functional mechanical, electrical, and control skills. The apprentices must also ensure efficiency, operational conformance, product quality and continuous improvement. Functions as a reliable member of the industrial refrigeration team, which is directly responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the ammonia refrigeration system and utility systems. Proactively gaining knowledge in troubleshooting related electro-mechanical systems are essential along with strong communication, interpersonal and team building skills to support site objectives.

The Industrial Refrigeration Apprentice Technician will follow a formal 2-4 year program designed to provide them the knowledge, skills and experience to develop into effective multi-skilled Industrial Refrigeration technicians. This will include a combination of technical training and in plant experience.

What are we looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet all job specific education requirements as deemed necessary
  • Associate Degree or equivalent training is considered a plus.
  • 2-5+ years of experience in maintenance related job.
  • Successful Completion of a drug and background screen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate a strong ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Apprentice role will be 4 years maximum.
  • 40 hours per week will be required while obtaining associates degree.
  • After completion of associates degree will be required to continue employment with Mars for 2 years to avoid payback of education cost.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Be multi-tasked/multi-skilled
  • Some travel possible (training, site support etc.)
  • Must maintain computer skills for entering work orders, and e-mail.
  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 25 kg
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
  • Must be able to use and work from platform lifts.
  • Must be able to work at heights.
  • Perform repetitive movements
  • Knowledge of Operator Interface Terminals (OIT)
  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts
  • SAP Training
  • Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays and all scheduled shutdowns
  • Must be willing to have a flexible schedule to support department goals.
  • Must have very strong communication skills
  • Must understand and work within GMP’s, HACCP and ISO
  • Advanced strong mechanical aptitude
  • Advanced strong analytical thinking
  • Advanced training skills
  • Must be able to work in extreme hot and cold environments for an extended period of time.
  • Must be able to wear an APR mask and SCBA.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Pursuant of a 2-year associates degree in a job related area (HVAC, Controls, Ammonia Systems, Project Management, etc.)

  • Performs all assigned activities & job tasks within the scope of the industrial refrigeration group.
  • Ability to maintain / operate ammonia and utility equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to spot ammonia system irregularities and correct irregularities
  • Takes corrective actions in solving problems to root cause level.
  • Knowledge of how to retrieve and maintain accurate records of QC checks, production numbers or waste performance, and other system data. Able to interpret this data and use in troubleshooting.
  • High degree of knowledge of ammonia and other utility systems.
  • High degree of ownership of all utility equipment.
  • Able to comprehend and interpret drawings, electrical schematics and P&ID’s.
  • Able to troubleshoot and correct controls, control systems, PLCs, system specific program issues.
  • Able to operate a computer and efficiently utilize the standard desktop systems.
  • Understands principles of inventory control.
  • Has knowledge of the plant's products and goals.
  • Understands production schedules and work instructions.
  • Has general knowledge of Mars & the systems used by Mars.
  • Duties and tasks are frequently non-routine. Resolves most questions and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.
  • Ability to work with a cross functional team of associates and contractors for problem solving and project goals and completion.
