Summary: Earth Partnership: Indigenous Arts & Sciences (IAS)—Connecting STEM to Native Science is a comprehensive effort to increase participation in science and provide a Native voice in STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. Project partners share a common vision of engaging youth in science and the natural world through ecological restoration, stewardship, and traditional Native values. IAS aims to deliver a culturally responsive informal science education model to inspire youth to pursue STEM interests and tribal careers in collaboration with Red Cliff, Bad River, Lac du Flambeau and Ho-Chunk Nations.
The initiative integrates indigenous knowledge and community cultural connections to reframe and reclaim science learning. IAS engages communities in providing relevant science learning through community dialogues, relationship building, informal-formal educator collaborations, educator professional development, Learning from the Land sessions for Native youth in grades 8-12, and youth activities throughout the year.

This project has four interrelated goals resulting in Native student achievement in science and pursuit of
STEM interests contributing to a robust tribal workforce. The goals are to:

  • Develop and strengthen capacity-building community partnerships with formal and informal educators and tribal members that generate enthusiasm among youth and adults for environmental science learning and stewardship imbued with culture and place
  • Integrate cultural resources, inquiry, and citizen science process skills (e.g., data collection, analysis, ecological restoration, water stewardship) in multiple learning settings
  • Indigenize science learning by integrating science with indigenous knowledge focusing on process, local protocols, connection to land, and cultural practices including: learning from elders, Native language, seasonal practices, storytelling, and seven traditional values
  • Strengthen racial, intergenerational and community partnerships to restore aquatic and terrestrial habitats through community-based stewardship projects and service learning
  • Engage Native youth in indigenous science learning experiences that motivate them to be engaged tribal members through critical thinking and analysis of environmental issues and to explore STEM careers that meet future workforce needs for managing tribal resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: This position is responsible for IAS activities in the Bad River community, in collaboration with Red Cliff’s IAS program. Duties and responsibilities are framed within four interrelated categories focused on:

Curriculum

  • Coordinate the development of indigenized science lessons to reflect local place and culture and

TEK in Bad River and Red Cliff communities with elders, tribal historic preservation officers and tribal educators

  • Work with local core team, curriculum consultants and teachers to integrate student data and relevant monitoring data into classroom lessons
  • Work with IAS staff, local partners, and consultants to integrate culturally accurate and authentic resources into learning projects

IAS educator institutes and youth Learning from the Land program:

  • Collaboratively design and implement one-week summer IAS educator professional development institutes and youth “Learning from the Land” workshops
  • Provide follow-up to youth through seasonal educational events and guidance on their service- learning projects or field projects
  • Provide follow-up support for school teams implementing restoration projects with their students including classroom visits, outdoor experiences, continuing education, and consultation

Monitoring and stewardship projects:

  • Coordinate monitoring, stewardship projects and field-based activities for youth and at schools with guidance from the Education Director and Maskiiziibii Natural Resources Director (Bad

River’s co-project leads) and from tribal elders, tribal scientists, Ashland High School teacher lead, and other partners (e.g., Red Cliff, community members, etc.).

Focus on Community:

  • Organize and lead family and community events in Bad River communities involving youth, families, tribal scientists, youth leaders, etc., that coincide with cultural and seasonal events and collaborate with Red Cliff on events; some events can be for both communities
  • Host community dialogues and listening sessions to develop relationships, identify resources, and determine community interests and needs
  • Collaborate with youth program leaders (Birch Hill Community House, Boys and Girls Club,

Youth Department, and others) to provide coordinated youth programs and opportunities

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental education, natural resources, or education
  • Experience teaching environmental or science education in informal or formal settings; implementing teacher professional development; developing instructional materials; participating in ecological restoration; and facilitating community engagement events and dialogues
  • Knowledge of Ojibwe treaty rights, tribal sovereignty, Ojibwe cultural practices, and academic barriers impacting education and career options for Native youth
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with a diverse group of educators, staff, students and community members in a collegial relationship with co-workers
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and interpersonal communication skills

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • This is a required driver position.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and meet eligibility for tribal insurance
  • Must be able to travel
  • Ability to write quarterly reports to share with core team (project leads, supervisor, Earth

Partnership staff) and advisors including taking photos, scheduling meetings, summarizing activities with outcomes, and reporting expenses

  • Be available for staff meetings at the Tribal Office and with IAS partners and advisors.
  • Disseminate IAS within communities and to a broader audience.

Background Check:

This position is contingent on ability to pass required security background check. Must pass a Care Giver
Background check regarding working with children and/or elderly. Must pass a required driver check regarding driving under tribal insurance.

Language Skills: Strong computer skills. Willingness to work with our Ojibwe Language Trainee Program to provide Ojibwe Language exposure to our youth and teachers.

Physical Demands: The duties of this position involve hiking, bending, stooping, lifting, sitting, working outdoors in heat and light rain, kayaking, gardening, gathering, day traveling to neighboring communities, and standing for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
