The Information Technology Department invites applications for an Identity and Access Management Engineer.


As part of the Information Security Office team and reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) in Information Technology (IT), the Identity and Access Management Engineer responsibilities include the implementation, configuration, and support of identity and access management systems. This position is responsible for identifying, creating and building new system requirements, functional specifications for system use cases and functional testing. This position is also responsible for leading the development of an appropriate rollout strategy and support/training materials for other IT professionals in relation to identity management and access.


Within the framework of creating a culture of information security compliance, this position researches, recommends, implements and maintains IAM related security solutions. This position also coordinates IAM efforts with other IT personnel and the campus community as necessary in regard to IT technology standards, best practices and strategies for IAM security.


  • Engineer campus Identity and Access Management infrastructure including the building and maintenance of IAM software, hardware and processes
  • Works with Information Security Office leadership to develop IAM solutions and
  • Recommends IAM related hardware and software purchases
  • Serves in a security advisory role for IT projects and initiatives
  • Partners with relevant stakeholders to ensure shared objectives are achieved
  • Implements, builds, tests, and maintains IAM processes, hardware and software
  • Ensures IAM service for the campus
  • Helps to research, design, and advocate new IAM technologies, architectures, and security products to support security requirements
  • Participates in the planning of identity management roadmaps and technology enhancements
  • Participates in initiatives to transform IAM provisioning and lifecycle management leveraging self-service and automation capabilities to enable a frictionless user experience
  • Assures adherence to policies and standards related to IAM and the campus community

This position is designed for a Career Ladder and may progress to a Computer Software Engineer/System II as higher-level knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience are attained.


Required Skills


  • Demonstrated experience with security engineering, systems engineering, LDAP, AD and ERP systems
  • Strong understanding of software, applications, database infrastructure, and other IT functions
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
  • Ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • General understanding of the integration of highly complex, diverse, internally and externally developed implementations of business functions to build enterprise-class, scalable systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds

Minimum Required Experience


  • Associate’s degree in Information Security, Computer Information Science or Management of Information Systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Computer Information Science or Management of Information Systems or equivalent
  • Advanced industry certification in information security or data management field
  • Two (2) plus years of experience in information security or data management
  • Experience in a higher education setting

Information Technology (IT) reports to the President of The University of Montana (UM). IT at UM is a campus service organization that provides computing and communication resources in support of the instructional, research, administrative, and public service activities of UM. IT maintains and operates complex information systems to support the University's administrative activities and offers a variety of technology support services to assist the University in using the resources and services that IT is responsible for providing.


The Information Security Office (ISO) coordinates the risk management process for UM’s information systems and directs campus-wide efforts to adequately secure Institutional data. This ISO is led by the Chief Information Security Officer and consists of several areas: Information Security Policy, Information Security Operations, and Identity and Access Management.


The Identity and Access Management Engineer reports to the Chief Information Security Officer who reports to the Chief Information Officer.

Position Details


Position Title: Identity and Access Management Engineer

(Computer Software Engineer/System I)

Position Number: NEW

Department: Information Technology

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week),

Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $31.702/hrPosition is salaried and exempt from overtime.

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum

Benefits Include: Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan,

partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
