High School Program Presenter

Program: TMHA High School Program

Position Summary

TMHA’s High School Program began in 2017, and has presented customized mental health curriculums to over 3,500 students. The primary curriculum, Mental Health 101, provides each student with mental health awareness, self-care options, and the ability to recognize when peers are in distress. This curriculum is presented in freshman Health classes at each participating High School, and has been modified for Middle School students as well. As the program expands, there is a need to build a team of Presenters around our Community Outreach & Presentations Coordinator. Each High School Program Presenter will provide presentations on mental health in local schools on the Central Coast. Each Presenter will work directly with the Community Outreach & Presentations Coordinator to learn and practice the Mental Health 101 Curriculum, and collaborate on any new presentations as needed. Each Presenter is responsible for the trauma-informed coordination of programs that outreach to and provide education for the community about mental illness, TMHA services, and community resources. This position promotes the TMHA mission and mental health education in the community, and works with the Community Outreach & Presentations Coordinator and the Community Engagement Team to promote special events and educational campaigns. In all areas of work, each High School Program Presenter will uphold the program philosophy, promoting recovery, wellness, and Trauma-Informed Care.

This is a Part-Time position, with duties dictated by school-based assignments throughout the year. Each High School Program Presenter will receive assignments and schedule from the Community Outreach & Presentations Coordinator and will frequently work in team settings, either co-presenting or alternating class periods.

Hours/ Salary

Relief Hours, scheduled as needed

Anticipated Hiring Range $18.00-$20.00 per hour

Position Range $17.00-$21.00 per hour


Experience and Skills:

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in psychology OR 1 years’ experience of public speaking and/or providing informational presentations to local communities. Candidates with mental Illness lived experience is preferred. Demonstrate ability to establish and foster collaborative working relationships with community partners. Demonstrate ability to make presentations and trainings in front of young audiences. Must have availability during daytime school hours. Well defined organizational and time management skills. Must have daytime availability for school presentations and dependable transportation and ability to travel within San Luis Obispo counties. Basic knowledge of mental health, trauma-informed care values/practices, all TMHA programs and a strong grounding in TMHA’s mission. Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative work style and strong oral/written and communication skills. Must be responsible, and reliable, and possess problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Ability to work independently and flexibly. Ability to handle intense situations, display good judgment and decision-making skills, and remain calm and clearheaded under pressure. Able to work effectively with a variety of people and personality types regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or socio-economic level. Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices while acting in such a manner as to assure at all times, maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients, and other persons contacted through TMHA business. Conditions of employment include: Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver’s License, reliable transportation, proof of auto insurance, and DMV driving record that meets TMHA’s current vehicle insurance requirements. May be required to utilize personal vehicle and auto insurance. Ability to possess and maintain good physical and mental health. Attendance is an essential function of this job that requires face-to-face interaction with clients and/or other employees. Must comply with a TB assessment (possibly a TB test if needed to confirm a negative tuberculosis result) and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting. Must be able to successfully First Aid and CPR training.
