High School Physics & Math Teacher Job at Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm

Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm Santa Rosa, CA 95401

The faculty at Summerfield seeks a high school Physics and Math teacher to join us beginning August 2022.

We are looking for a teacher with a broad imagination for teaching Math and Physics phenomenologically: guiding students to insight through lived encounters with the real world rather than teaching rote concepts. The Physics curriculum builds on itself over the four grades, beginning with thermodynamics in 9th grade, kinematics in 10th, electricity and magnetism as well as astronomy in 11th, and optics in 12th. Math tracks span Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry and Calculus and require the curiosity and creativity to work with students of varying abilities simultaneously. Math blocks may include 10th grade Sacred Geometry and Conic Sections, and 11th grade Projective Geometry as well as 8th grade Platonic Solids. As many of these classes are unique to Waldorf schools, the ideal candidate would have Waldorf experience, and a willingness to be trained in Waldorf pedagogy is a requirement. The Math and Science department is made up of several faculty members with different concentrations, most of whom share the Math curriculum.

The faculty and staff at Summerfield have a commitment to faculty/staff-led governance so that we act in full freedom toward forming a culture of initiative and mutual support. Each of us (faculty, students, and staff) supports and attends to this culture in unique ways both personally and formally. This may include working on a governance team or committee, being a co-advisor for a class, or mentoring a group of mixed-age students.

At Summerfield, we teach 300 students aged 3-18 on a 38-acre campus which includes a biodynamic farm, nature preserve, circus tent and new Art/Tech facility. This is a dynamic time to be joining the faculty at Summerfield as the Covid 19 pandemic has opened up exciting new possibilities for working with the land, each other and this moment. We are asking big questions and seeking a colleague who is inspired to join us in asking of the future “What wills to happen?” and then collaborate our way into the answers.

Please email your letter of intention, along with a resume, to Michelle Bovard, Human Resources Coordinator at michelle@summerfieldwaldorf.org. Please also include three references (with phone numbers), at least two of whom have seen you teach.

About Summerfield Waldorf School & Farm:

Summerfield spans all of childhood, preschool through twelfth grade. Sprawling over 38 acres, we have one of the most extensive Waldorf programs on the continent including a fully operational Biodynamic farm and a vibrant circus program. We make every effort to educate the whole child in practical arts, movement, agriculture, social inclusion, artistic work, and a rich festival life. Our students love coming to school every day as much as their teachers do!

The school (est. 1974) is located in beautiful Sonoma County, just 60 miles north of San Francisco. We enjoy an idyllic Mediterranean climate with spring-time fields of wild flowers, hot summers cooled by ocean fog, rich autumn light on vibrant harvest colors, and wet, green winters. Sonoma County is home to ancient redwood forests, stands of mighty oak, and scenic, rugged coastlines.

Picturesque orchards, vineyards, and dairies abound. Many of our hills and mountains are still truly wild and offer hikers and bikers miles of trails to explore. Sonoma County has also become a haven for food enthusiasts, offering some of the best restaurants and wines in the world. Many local farmers are using organic and Biodynamic methods, with their bounties found in our markets and restaurants. This is the setting our students and families enjoy!
