Performs direct service to clients of the County seniors and aging programs. Duties include housekeeping, home management, personal care and emotional support. An employee in this class provides direct service for the clients of the County Senior Services program. The employee works with the client to plan, organize and carry out tasks associated with personal care. The employee must involve the individual or family served whenever possible in all activities. Responsibilities include the necessity to recognize the importance of a clean, healthy environment in performing household and personal care duties and to take measures, when necessary, to keep the clients home in a safe condition. The employee must be aware of the need to provide personal care tasks with respect for the privacy and dignity of the person(s) being served. Considerable tact and independent judgment must be exercised in dealing with the clients and their families. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Services Social Worker and is evaluated through observations, reports and discussions.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides personal and environmental care tasks such as housekeeping and health care. Duties include bathing, shaving, combing hair, and providing oral hygiene for seniors and clients with disabilities.
• Encourages the client to have independence in performing needed tasks; demonstrates techniques which will increase independence and relieve stress of person or family served.
• Maintains a smooth functioning household during illness or absence of the member of the household generally responsible for caretaking.
• Motivates clients toward self-sufficiency and self-esteem.
• Submits reports on important changes observed in the family or individual served; seeks guidance and advice from supervisor whenever in doubt.
• Attends conferences and team meetings to expand knowledge and skills in serving clients.
• Provides authorized health care and personal hygiene assistance.
• Provides service for shopping and local errands for clients.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of reaching, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.

Must be able to perform active work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a moderate amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, lift, home management tasks and assist with personal care needs.

Desirable Education and Experience

Requires the ability to perform basic home management tasks and personal care services. Prefer high school graduate or equivalent.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Certified Nursing Assistant Certification Level I/II.
