About the Role

We are seeking a Health Communications Specialist I to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Morbidity Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Responsible for working with other CDC health communications, scientific, and management staff to plan and develop content, and assist in the production and dissemination of information material for use in print and electronic media.

Responsibilities

  • Prep, coordinate, and follow-up on high-level meetings with the Center Leadership and other senior leaders across the agency
  • Enhance functional capacity of the office by monitoring, informing, and driving leadership meeting agendas, decision-making, and directed actions
  • Assist with agency-wide initiatives, including the CDC Public Health Data Modernization Initiative
  • Provides substantive program consultation, guidance, and assistance and is responsible for carrying out and promoting significant public health program activities
  • Collects and analyzes information to address highly complex program needs; coordinate with CSELS’ Associate Directors and other Subject Matter Experts to address needs
  • Works independently and as a member of the team to lead preparation and briefing materials with both internal and external colleagues
  • Leads and assists with planning and execution of assigned projects and planning initiatives
  • Provides background information to leadership and coordinates with CSELS programs on requests for information, decisions, and directed actions
  • Coordinates efforts on programs/projects/studies as appropriate with other CSELS and CDC staff
  • Interacts with high level officials within the organization on policy, communications, and workforce issues
  • Interacts with representatives from public and private public health organizations
  • Develops materials, documents, talking points for CSELS leadership
Requirements:

Required Experience and Skills

  • Experience writing and editing both electronic and print publications
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices
  • Knowledge of organizational structure and mission
  • Skill in managing, planning, organizing, and directing multiple, complex processes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Outstanding critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Discretion, professionalism, and excellent judgment in customer service
  • Project management skills—self-sufficient with demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, and problem-solve across multiple projects and tasks.
  • Previous experience with CDC programs, policies, procedures, and communication activities preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities independently and yet maintain the flexibility to respond to additional requests.
  • Ability to obtain government clearance.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in journalism, communications, advertising, English, or related field. Master's degree preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift 25 pounds regularly.
