Head of Community Job at Mercury

Mercury San Francisco, CA

SF, NY, Toronto, Portland, or remote
Full-time
Mercury

Here at Mercury we want to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs, and from the product side we’re approaching that by building financial products to give founders confidence to build. After all, capital is critical for a company’s success; but it’s insufficient on its own and many well-funded startups still don’t make it.

What else does it take to build a great company? As you may know yourself, it can be a long, hard journey. But it doesn’t have to be a lonely one. And there’s a potential to take the tiniest of shortcuts by learning from others.

That’s why we believe in the power of community, and are looking for a Community Lead to build a strong community in the Mercury ethos: helpful, high quality, trustworthy. We have some early signals that founders (and investors) want this, too – in 2 years, Mercury Raise has helped 600+ startups raise $1.7B. And our first go at Founder Forums was oversubscribed by 3x, with 400 startup founders meeting monthly in small groups.

We’re looking for someone who can scale and innovate on our community programs, making community a true differentiator for Mercury, and a reason people want to be a Mercury customer. The ideal person for this role is a creative thinker with deep founder empathy, and a strategic operator who can lead an existing team of 3 people and partner with others in the company to develop an outstanding set of community programs.

Some of the specific things you’ll do on the job:

  • Manage a team of 3 people (and scale the team as needed), overseeing the existing programs (Mercury Raise, Founder Forums, Investor Database).
  • Ideate and test new program ideas to expand our community, or deepen ties with existing community members.
  • Set KPIs that go deep - beyond just the number of people who engage but instead uncovering how many people found the experience super valuable.
  • Work cross functionally: with sales and relationship managers who work with our customers daily; with our content and events teams; and with our product team to build things to enhance community efforts.

Traits we think will be helpful for the job:

  • Founder, angel investor, or someone who really understands and empathizes with our community members (founders + investors); potentially someone already ingrained in the startup community.
  • Strategic + operational chops; someone who has scaled something up, who can think about the big vision, and get down in the details to make sure execution is flawless.
  • Creative and able to think outside the box (and create an environment for the team to think creatively, too): we are aiming much higher than a mostly dead slack channel where people just post job openings.
  • A strong leader who can mentor the team and work with many other stakeholders, both internal and external.

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and all employees receive salary + equity + benefits. Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company.

The ranges shared are for the expectations as laid out in the job description, however we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. If that ends up being the case, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate.

The salary range for candidates in the New York City or San Francisco area is $220,000–$250,000.

The salary range for candidates in the US outside of the New York City / San Francisco area is $185,000–$230,000.

The salary range for candidates in Canada is CAD 190,000–245,000.
