With a brand new state-of-the art campus under construction in the Pinewood neighborhood of Miami, JLA will begin accepting student applications for grades 6, 7, 9 and 10 in the Fall of 2022 for the academic year 2023-2024.

GUIDANCE COUNSELING _________________________________________________

The Guidance Department at JLA believes that students need guidance in every aspect of their lives. Our counseling program focuses on the social and emotional growth and demands of high achieving students, open and consistent communication with families and the community, the scheduling of students in appropriate class levels, and communicating with teachers in regards to student performance. Guidance counselors are entrusted with helping students successfully navigate the challenges they may be facing inside or outside of school, with the objective of creating a positive impact on student well-being and achievement.

RESPONSIBILITIES _________________________________________________________

Full-time employment for guidance positions will commence in August 2023. Responsibilities will include:

  • Help students manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills
  • Provide individual student academic planning and goal setting
  • Provide short-term counseling to students
  • Provide referrals for long-term support
  • Collaborate with families/teachers/ administrators/community for student success and in cases involving disciplinary issues
  • Provide advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
  • Employ data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges
  • Acting as a proactive and responsive resource for students, parents, colleagues, and outside partners on emerging issues of emotional well-being in the community.
  • Providing support for child abuse concerns and establishing communication with child protective services
  • Lead the admin team in formulating and implementing responses to a variety of serious issues which may arise
  • Leading and/or attending weekly student wellness meetings and student support team meetings as scheduled.
  • Facilitating professional learning for faculty/staff and parent education.

QUALIFICATIONS _________________________________________________________

Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of school guidance experience at the middle/upper school level. He/She must have a graduate degree in counseling and have certification. Experience working with gifted and talented students is preferred.

In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • The ability to connect with and inspire students.
  • The ability and desire to work collaboratively on a high functioning team.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Mastery of Google Workspace for Education and an overall comfort with technology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • The desire to be a part of a learning community.
  • A strong work ethic.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
