Job Summary/Basic Function
This is semi-skilled work in the care of the grounds of a state institution, facility, or public building. Work involves responsibility for the appearance and general care of the University grounds and athletic fields and may include seasonal lead work of a small group of employees or resident helpers engaged in cleaning and other simple grounds keeping activities. Work involves considerable physical and manual labor throughout the year exposed to the elements.

Annual Salary Range: $29,301.00 plus comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Health insurance – Low bi-weekly premium. Employees pay 5% of bi-weekly salary for benefit coverage with ability to pay 2.5% when participating in the wellness program.
  • Dental insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days
  • Vision insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days.
  • Group life insurance – equal to annual salary (up to $40,000.00) at no cost to the employee
  • Retirement – 2 plans to choose from
  • Tuition waiver – employee, spouse, and dependents are eligible
  • Vacation leave– up to 11 days accrued per year for first 3 years, increases to 19 days per year after 3 years
  • Sick leave – up to 11 days accrued per year, including up to 5 days per year that can be taken to care for a family member
  • Holiday leave – Up to 12 days per calendar year

Required Qualifications
  • One year of experience in groundskeeping work OR any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping and simple horticultural practices.
  • Knowledge of the care of lawns, flowers, trees, and common shrubs.
  • Knowledge of the potential hazards of toxic chemical pesticides and herbicides, and the safety precautions required to minimize these hazards.
  • Ability to interpret pesticide and herbicide label directions and related literature.
  • Ability to maintain and make ordinary repairs to machinery, equipment and improvements, such as walks, lanes parking places, sheds, and benches.
  • Ability to lay out and participate in planting, watering, sodding, spraying and trimming and cleaning work in lawns, gardens and walks.
  • Good physical condition to permit long hours of outdoor physical labor.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Pesicide/Herbicide Aplicator license.
  • Graduation from a related trade school or degree in related field.

Job Description
  • Lays out and participates in planting, watering, sodding, spraying and trimming and cleaning work on lawns, gardens and walks.
  • Participates in the maintenance and marking of athletic fields.
  • Removes dirt, rubbish, snow, leaves and other refuse and maintains roads, lawns, sheds, benches and parking places.
  • Operates mechanized and motorized groundskeeping equipment such as gang mowers, rollers, and roto-tillers.
  • Participates in filling, surfacing, hauling and fertilizing operations.
  • Prepares reports and keeps records of time, materials and equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • All other duties as assigned.


SAFETY
  • In the performance of the duties, the employee must be knowledgeable and experienced with safe operation of equipment and tools (hand and power).
  • Immediately reports accidents and incidents to include near misses.
  • Work safely by using Personal Protective Equipment, maintaining equipment, following safety procedures and policies, etc.
  • Complete safety training within first two weeks of start date and monthly thereafter.
  • Seek additional training and certification to perform their duties.
  • Identify safety issues related to equipment, tools, actions or processes.
  • Review MSDS for chemicals related to the department.
  • Be aware of and report potential safety hazards immediately.
  • Resolve pending hazards in a timely fashion.
  • Consult with supervisor or Environmental Health & Safety staff as needed to resolve unsafe conditions or obtain additional training/resources.
  • Stop unsafe practice regardless of shop or contractor if imminently endangering life or severe property damage.
  • Perform daily pre-operation checks on equipment.
  • Leave work area clean and orderly at the end of shift and/or job.

Essential Functions
  • Significant amount of physical effort required.
  • Moderate exposure to physical risks.
  • Ability to sit/stand for long lengths of time.
  • Must work outside for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Must be able to lift/pull/push up to 50 pounds.
  • This position requires working in ice, snow, rain, and sunny conditions, and other adverse working conditions.
  • Individuals must work mostly outdoors all year round, but some work is indoors.
  • Work in conditions from 0°F to 100°F.
  • Work environment may be dry, wet, humid, noisy from other construction activities or operation of building/grounds equipment.
  • Will encounter presence of dust, odors, debris, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • May have to work in cramped spaces and otherwise uncomfortable positions in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, when necessary, hard hats, respirators, eye protection, hearing protection, etc.
