The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) is a program of GLITC and is an established public health authority. Since 1996, GLITC has served the 34 federally recognized Tribes, four urban Indian communities, and three Indian Health Service (IHS) service units within the Bemidji IHS Area (Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago). About the Graphic Designer Position

GLITEC is seeking a Graphic Designer, dependent upon experience and qualifications, to be an integral member of our team. We are a growing program that is focused on public health practice and community-based work.


This position requires an awareness and keen appreciation of Native traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs. Qualified applicants must always demonstrate the ability to work effectively with contacts at Native organizations. This requires humility, respect, courtesy, open-mindedness, trustworthiness, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature while continuing to pursue our mission.


Position Summary:

The graphic designer provides creative concepts that are culturally appropriate, innovative, and professional and follows current internal campaign and brand guidelines while working closely with a communication and design lead, project managers, other GLITEC staff, and contract designers to execute design concepts. Assembles images, typography, or motion graphics to create well-designed, effective deliverables. The graphic designer creates graphics and performs the layout of published, printed, or electronic media, such as reports, fact sheets, social media content, postcards, posters, and promotional materials. Participates in strategy sessions, project input meetings, and brainstorming teams, especially when reviewing drafts created by external graphic designers.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in projects from initial conception through the development, revision, approval, publishing, distribution, and promotion process and engage in open communication throughout.
  • Participate in strategy, input, and brainstorming meetings with a focus on helping guide and optimize the design processes to make end products easier for all audiences to understand, access, and use.
  • Develop new, original visual designs, deliverables, and templates that resonate with the intended audience and encourage them to follow the desired call to action.
  • Revise the visual elements in current deliverables to create more effective designs or promote brand consistency.
  • Review drafts of materials created by external graphic designers to provide feedback and direction on graphic design elements including colors, fonts, images, and layouts.
  • Create final design files in both web and print formats and collaborate as needed with professional printers.
  • Complete project tasks on time, successfully, and in a manner consistent with the objectives and goals of the program and according to the funding agency’s terms and conditions, if applicable.
  • Communicate about project changes, feedback, and updates in a clear, positive, and professional manner.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and work effectively with a variety of team members while ensuring quality, deadlines, and scope are properly maintained.
  • Provide quality control by understanding and applying general graphic design principles, cultural considerations, usability and literacy best practices, and brand guidelines during the creative process and throughout the internal proofing, finalization, and distribution phases.
  • Assist with deliverables for topic areas including but not limited to breastfeeding support and promotion, infectious diseases, vaccinations, emergency preparedness, HIV and STIs, intimate partner violence, maternal and child health, substance use disorders, and suicide prevention.
  • Participate in new business efforts while upholding procedures and processes.
  • Attend technical conferences and seminars to stay up to date on technological advances and current design trends.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining brand guidelines, templates, and databases or systems that help organize and guide design-related content.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

This is a full-time salaried position based on skills and experience, with a pay range of $40,000 – $50,000 annually with benefits including paid time off (PTO) in the form of annual and personal leave; paid holidays; insurance benefits including health, dental, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term disability (STD) insurance, and long-term disability (LTD) insurance; health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), and 401(k) retirement plan. When traveling for work, eligible expenses are reimbursed based on GSA rates. Drug test screening is required before employment. This is not a remote position.

Qualifications: An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience. Required: 2-year degree in graphic design or relevant field, or equivalent experience; experience with Adobe Creative Suite (including Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator), Microsoft Office (including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), and similar programs; knowledge of the principles and trends in visual and graphic design; understanding of print and web considerations; artistic capacity; ability to be creative while adhering to established brand guidelines; strong communication skills (both written and verbal); ability to receive and incorporate feedback with humility and grace; problem-solving skills; strong interpersonal skills and customer-centric attitude; willingness to communicate with clients over the phone, email, and in person; excellent attention to detail and devoted work ethic; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to work professionally as part of a team and build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; positive and driven attitude; fast learner and open to adapting to new situations; organized and able to apply lessons learned for continuous, ongoing improvement; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and follow data protection policies; and possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel.


Preferred:
4-year degree in graphic design or relevant field, or equivalent experience; artistic aptitude in creating illustrations, data visualizations, and other creative deliverables; experience working with Native American Tribal Governments, a Tribal organization, and/or not-for-profit agency in public health; familiarity with English grammar and punctuation; photography skills and experience running photo shoots.
