We’re seeking a qualified, enthusiastic and organized individual with retail and merchandising experience to join our team as General Merchandise Category Manager for the Foodland Stores. This position reports to the Director of Grocery & General Merchandise and is responsible for the performance in sales, margins, category management, buying and merchandising of categories he/her will be assigned for the grocery department

  • Must have a thorough understanding of sales, gross margin, cost of goods, freight, distribution, process and procedures as it applies to the department’s operation and profitability, with a demonstrated ability to effectively and positively impact each area on a timely basis.

  • Must have extensive knowledge of all products and practices.
  • Must be an excellent communicator
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works independently within the guidelines established by the job description, company policies and procedures, with direction from the Director of Grocery and General Merchandise
  • Assumes the lead role in the selection and procurement of merchandise for the GM categories they are assigned
  • Develops, maintains, and enhances established merchandising programs including but not limited to store merchandising presentation, product selection, product mix, authorizations, gross margins and sales
  • Periodically reviews programs based on the needs of the business and reviews such programs, and recommends and initiates changes as deemed necessary
  • Participates in ensuring cost, retail and gross margin integrity
  • Responsible for meeting or increasing the company’s sales and gross margin budgets
  • Maintains proper inventory levels, product replenishment and presentation standards
  • Assumes the lead role with new store openings, renovations and store merchandising projects and insures the timely and accurate ordering and delivery of products, fixtures and equipment are executed
  • Develops standard merchandise “sets” by store types including but not limited to space allocation, product location, product and product set
  • Reviews “sets” and initiates changes/resets as deemed necessary
  • Research, requests, utilizes vendor supplied merchandising techniques, sets, fixtures and effectively incorporates these into the company’s merchandising concepts, needs,requirements and strategies.
  • Communicates proper issues related to merchandising and product procurement to the director of merchandising
  • Works with our vendor partners to help support resets and maintains a fair, ethical and professional relationship with all vendors
  • Remain current with trends/products and techniques as it relates to merchandising
  • Participates in the implementation of Company programs and strategies
  • Provide operational and administrative support
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal guidelines
  • Communicate programs and initiatives with stores, vendors and other departments
  • Able to resolve issues with store managers, District Managers (DM)’s and vendors
  • Participates in the training and supervision for all new and existing programs and initiatives
  • Reviews, analyzes published week reports by the company, identifies and corrects deficiencies as it relates to sales, gross margins, all processes and procedures including but not limited to ordering, replenishment, receiving, merchandising, product stocking and rotation, pricing, authorized product selection, signage and promotions
  • Records, reports, monitors and remains current with competitors’ prices, products and promotions
  • Maintains proper, accurate documentation and record keeping as it relates to store merchandising activities, products and vendors as directed
  • Consistently utilizes the companies daily bulletin to effectively address global issues
  • Completes required/requested reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Completes other duties and projects assigned by the director of merchandising which may include non-mainland store projects

Education, Training, Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • College degree and / or equivalent combination of education or work experience required
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of hard goods experience in same or similar capacity
  • Computer experience preferred with working competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Grocery retail experience, preferred

Other Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be willing to regularly travel
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 70 lbs.
