Immediate opening for a Full-Time 2nd Shift Custodian at our Junior High School. Hours are 2:30 PM - 11:00 PM with Monday and Tuesday off. Ability to learn the procedures used in safe and effective custodial operations and the effective operation and maintenance of custodial equipment such as floor maintenance equipment, snow removal equipment, and lawn care equipment required. Previous custodial/maintenance experience preferred. Starting wage of $18.78 per hr. Benefits available after 90 days.

Hollidaysburg Area School District Title: Custodian

Reports to: Lead Custodian

OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:

To maintain the condition and operation of the school buildings and grounds to promote their full and effective use.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to learn the procedures used in safe and effective custodial operations.

2. Ability to learn safe and effective operation and maintenance of custodial equipment ex. floor maintenance equipment, snow removal equipment, and lawn care equipment

3. Ability to learn the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and care of gas/coal boilers and associated equipment.

4. Ability to work effectively with others and the physical strength to complete normal custodial tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

1. Perform routine cleaning duties in areas to which assigned including, but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, waxing/polishing, washing/vacuuming, and ash removal where applicable.

2. Report to Lead Custodian and District Building Supervisor immediately all of the conditions of an emergency, unsafe or unusual nature, including repairs required.

3. Assist in the unloading and storage of supplies, furniture, and educational supplies.

4. Knowledgeable in the operation, maintenance, and light trouble-shooting of gas/coal fired boilers; and the monitoring of compressors, pumps, pneumatics, and other boiler equipment and systems.

5. Shovel snow, mow grass, sweep walks and perform other grounds keeping functions as necessary.

6. Clean and sanitize rest rooms and locker facilities.

7. Perform light maintenance work and make minor repairs to building and equipment.

8. Secure building, close and lock windows and doors, and turn out lights.

9. Protect the interests of the school district at all times especially when outside groups are using school facilities.

10. Accept supplies: delivering and replacing supplies within building.

11. Assist in the regulation of heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.

12. Maintain, service, and clean on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment, including boilers and associated equipment.

13. Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.

14. Such other duties as may from time to time be assigned.

OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:

1. Raise and lower United States flag as assigned.

2. Operate and care for vacuum cleaners, scrubbing, polishing and waxing machines, mowers, tractors and such other equipment as is necessary to performance of the job.

3. Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the Principal or the District Building Supervisor.

4. Develop and maintain a positive and professional image in all contacts with school district employees, supervisors, and the public.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Works indoors / outdoors in adequate workspace, lighting, and ventilation. Temperature fluctuations and exposure to outdoor weather.

2. Works with average indoor / outdoor exposure to noise and stress but subject to constant disruptions.

3. Works indoors / outdoors with normal indoor / outdoor exposure to dust / dirt.

4. Periodically exposed to irate students and / or parents.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:

1. Must possess hearing, seeing, speaking, smelling, and reasoning senses necessary to carry out job duties.

2. Must possess ability to record, convey, and present information; explain policies and procedures; and follow instructions

3. Must possess ability to sit, stand, and walk periodically throughout the workday with occasional carrying, reaching, and grasping as necessary to carry out job duties.

4. Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of hands / fingers to operate a computer and calculator to simple movements of feet / legs and torso necessary to carry out job duties.

5. Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate on work.

6. Medium work with occasional lifting / carrying objects weighing up to 80 pounds.

7. Must be able to lift 50 pounds above their head.

8. Must be able to climb ladders.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential function of job.

2. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.

3. Must possess initiative and problem-solving skills.

4. Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with clients, co-workers, and others.

5. Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to employee and student information.

6. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

7. Must possess knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and the ability to effectively supervise the work of the assigned personnel and handle related personnel matters.
