SUMMARY OF POSITION

The FBCDCEducator will be employed by Children's Museum Houston and work at our sister site, Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center (198 Kempner, Sugar Land) to engage children and families in creative, exhibits-based projects, activities, discussion and role play in order to develop their problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills, spark imagination and engage in STEAM learning. The FBCDC Educator will work throughout the museum galleries, engaging visitors through hands-on interactions within the galleries, facilitating themed workshops and activities, STEAM demonstrations, and guiding school field experiences. This facilitation includes ensuring that the Discovery Center/Museum’s policies are upheld, that the exhibits are reset as needed for visitor interactions, that visitors are safe and receive rapid first aid assistance if needed, and that visitors enjoy their overall experience. Excellent interpersonal, planning, communication, and organizational skills needed. Bachelor’s degree required, Elementary Educationminor or equivalent coursework preferred. A minimum 2 years’ teaching experience required. Tuesday – Saturday, 40 hours a week with evening and weekend hours as necessary. Flexibility of work hours and days required. Must live in Fort Bend County.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Brief Description of Responsibility

1.

Lead and facilitate programming to engage visitors in all [CM1]Galleries including story times, hands-on workshops, weekly activity facilitation and exhibits-based demonstrations.

2.

Facilitate communication and collaboration amongst key personnel, including educators, administrators, graphic designers, fabricators, contractors, and project advisors.

3.

Work with Director of Gallery Programs to maintain notes of detailed correspondence and decisions throughout the development process, and use these notes to keep projects on track.

4.

Be well versed across all major disciplines for elementary-aged children including reading, math, science, social studies, art, and technology.

5.

Facilitate visitors' learning by describing, modeling, and prompting engagement with Museum exhibits in all galleries

6.

Serve as the teaching guide for visiting classrooms, leading students through the curriculum focus set for each exhibit based on students’ age/grade.

7.

Use technology in innovative ways to educate visitors in the Museum and online. This includes recommending apps and videos for the Museum’s 21-Tech project and writing content for the Museum’s More CMH app, part of the XCL grant.

8.

Evaluate success of exhibit components, and test project ideas and activities with visitors and staff. Collect and analyze data, and facilitate group-decision-making based on results.

9.

Train Discovery Guides on all galleries, and meet with them weekly to communicate new information about exhibits, answer questions, reinforce goals, and generate feedback.

10.

Monitor exhibit functionality including all technological components and signage. Report problems to appropriate personnel. Assist with modifications/remedies as needed.

11.

Throughout each day re-stock supplies, reboot exhibits that are not functioning properly, and call-in assistance as needed.

12.

Provide monthly written reports, executive reports, board reports, etc.

13.

Represent the Children’s Museum Houston and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center in a positive manner via attitude, communications, and enthusiasm.

14.

Spend time in the galleries and lead field experience tours as needed.

15.

Attend bi-weekly meetings with Director of Gallery Programs

16.

Attend professional meetings and review literature to remain current in museum and education trends as needed.

17.

Attend Gallery Programs and other regularly scheduled meetings as needed.

18.

Assist in evaluation efforts.

19.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree in Education or related.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree required, EC-6 certification preferred.

A minimum 2 years’ teaching experience is a must.

SKILLS REQUIRED

· Experience facilitating children’s / family learning, preferably in STEM, social sciences, cultural education and/or the arts.

· Comfortable presenting to children and families in both in-person and virtual settings.

· Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

· An interest in thinking outside the box to teach a wide variety of topics to a diverse audience.

· Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

· The ability to interact effectively with children, adults, and host organization staff.

· A passion for educating the public.

· Ability to lift 20 lbs and climb stairs.

· Strong interpersonal skills to interact regularly with visitors.

· Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.

· Ability to work independently.

· Ability to work in a flexible environment, problem solve, and respond to the needs of the program and visitors as appropriate.

· Ability to work flexible hours including some weekends, holidays, and evenings.

· Detail oriented, works well under pressure, able to juggle multiple tasks, a team player.

· Computer skills in word processing, Internet search, e-mail, app usage, and spreadsheet programs.
