Job Description

Ottawa Food exists to eliminate hunger, encourage healthy eating, support local farmers, and create conditions that equitably ensure that every person has an available supply of well-balanced meals. This position will focus on assisting in program implementation, program organizing, research, partnership development, and other duties as assigned. Students will meet with their preceptor weekly and will attend the monthly Healthy Eating and Eliminate Hunger Subcommittee meetings. Students will also attend the Migrant Farmworker Health Taskforce monthly meeting and a Health Promotions team meeting. Students will work closely with their preceptor to effectively integrate into the Ottawa County food system, organize and implement community initiatives, and have meaningful Public Health learning experiences.

Duration: Winter 2023 (Jan - April) – 200 hours total

(hours are flexible-possibility for up to 400)

Compensation: Unpaid Position

Essential Job Functions

Project Deliverables:
During the course of the internship, students will successfully:


  • Plan efforts to alleviate migrant farmworker hunger
  • Organize farmers market programs that connect local farmers, community members, and local food pantries via the Produce Donation and Produce Rescue programs
  • Development farmer, community groups, school groups, and other partnerships to strengthen the Pick for Pantries program
  • Plan efforts to alleviate senior citizen hunger and poor health
  • Enhance cultural celebrations through organizing and attending cultural meals
  • Amplify the voices of community members experiencing food insecurity through storytelling and social media
  • Perform data collection, research, and evaluation as needed

Required Education, Training and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:
Students applying for this internship should be a senior currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or enrolled in a graduate degree program. Reliable transportation is required. This position is best suited for a student that prioritizes community connection and relationship building, is able to work non-traditional hours (some nights and weekends), and has excellent verbal and planning skills.
