Compensation: $22 - $25/hour

Location: San Diego, CA (Point Loma area)

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours: Full time. Some weekend, evening and special events coverage as required.

Start Date: January 2023

POSITION SUMMARY:

VMOTA seeks an Exhibition/Curatorial Manager to be responsible for managing overall museum and art gallery exhibits to include directing instructional activities and acquisition of new collections. Specializing in standing exhibits, safekeeping research and public service objectives of the organization. Creating and tracking contracts and exhibition agreements.cord keeping and facility maintenance. May participate in or lead fundraising activities.

WHO WE ARE:

Visions Museum of Textile Art (VMOTA) is a premiere national venue for viewing and exhibiting contemporary art quilts and textiles. VMOTA’s history began with the founding of Quilt San Diego in 1985 to present the prestigious international juried biennial, Quilt Visions. In 2007, volunteer members organized a community build and developed a permanent venue for the Quilt Visions and Interpretations biennials and to present Fiber Art exhibitions year-round. Located in the historic Liberty Station Arts District in San Diego, California, VMOTA educates and inspires our community through exhibitions, programs and events that promote the appreciation and understanding of quilts and related textiles as fine art. VMOTA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, governed by an 11-person Board of Directors, and supported by over 500 annual members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possesses Bachelor’s degree in Art, Anthropology, Art History, Education or related field.
  • Experience working 2- 4 years in a non-profit Art organization preferred.
  • Understands Microsoft, Google, and Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator platforms.
  • Experience with Square or other point of service software preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational project management and organizational skills.
  • Works well as a part of a team in a fast-paced environment and have a positive, flexible, can-do attitude.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to collaborate with artists, other institutions, and diverse communities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with confidence to conduct taped interviews.
  • Solid negotiation, resource management, and people skills.
  • Enjoys contemporary textile art and be eager to expand their knowledge of this field.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Exhibition and Events

  • Manages exhibition calendars with Operations Manager for all gallery spaces.
  • Works with Curatorial Committee to schedule exhibitions, special events, interviews and tours in multiple galleries.
  • Creates and tracks contracts and exhibition agreements with artists and ensures all due dates are met.
  • Compiles artists statements, biographies, and art photos.
  • Prepares monthly Curatorial Agenda and Slideshow for Curatorial meetings.
  • Partners with the Curatorial Committee to prepare floor plans for each exhibit.
  • Manages artwork as it arrives, logging an inventory list, creating condition reports, and storing packaging. Ensures artists have included prepaid return shipping labels.
  • Manages installation schedule.
  • Orders supplies for exhibition installation in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Ensures exhibition lighting is adequate for installation and highlights artwork appropriately.
  • Maintains Condition reports on all artwork prior to installation and for de-installation.
  • Creates content for museum exhibition signage.
  • Interviews artists for one hour taped interview to involve artists’ specific inspiration and techniques.
  • Prepares scripts and hosts training for docent tours.
  • Responsible for annual permanent collection Accession/Deaccession inspection and documentation keeping electronic and hard copy files and maintaining electronic and physical files of inspection documentation.
  • Works with education and outreach, hosting in-house events.

General Administration:

  • Keeps museum’s internal and external calendars up to date.
  • Manages museum correspondence and records in designated files.
  • Liaise with the printer for the museum's major print and signage orders.
  • Liaison with all staff members as required working as a team to achieve deadlines.
  • Meets with wholesale suppliers and consignment artists for store products.
  • Maintains relevant hard copy files for permanent collection, contracts and calendars for front desk.
  • Creates Zoom links/invitations for Curatorial meetings and events.
  • Assists front desk volunteers, as needed.

  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include, close vision, distance visions, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • Must be able to safely climb ladders or scaffolding while carrying up to 40 pounds and lift.
  • May need to stoop, kneel, bend or crouch.
  • Must be able to occasionally touch, handle, and feel textile fibers.
