The Executive Director of Public Affairs and Marketing serves the Superintendent and Board of Trustees as the top public information and media communications professional and advisor. The incumbent plans, organizes and directs strategic communications, marketing, and outreach supporting Long Beach City College. The incumbent will also advocate for the District with internal and external relations, media relations, community outreach, and the marketing of services. Duties of this position include directing the work of the Public Affairs and Marketing department, coordinating services that keep staff and the community engaged, proactively addressing public affairs information, and aggressively marketing the College to prospective and current students and alumni.

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, or related discipline; and a minimum of five years of progressive experience in public relations, marketing research, and/or intergovernmental affairs representation, with three years in a leadership capacity; or a combination of education and experience. AT-A-GLANCE POSITION INFORMATION

    • Type of position: Full Time – Senior Management. Employees whose positions are designated as senior management of the classified service shall be a part of the classified service and shall be afforded all rights, benefits, and burdens of other classified employees, except that they shall be exempt from all provisions relating to obtaining permanent status in a senior management position. Positions in the senior management of the classified service shall be filled from an unranked list of eligible persons who have demonstrated managerial ability who have been found qualified for the positions as specified by the Superintendent-President and determined by the Personnel Commission. NOTE: Senior management position designation pending approval of the Governing Board of Trustees.
  • Location: Liberal Arts Campus
  • Salary: MGT RANGE 15: $144,671 - $197,115 Annually.
  • Advanced salary placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Duties

GENERAL PURPOSE
Plans, organizes and directs strategic communications, marketing, and outreach supporting Long Beach City College. Plans, develops strategies, manages, and advocates for the District with internal and external relations, media relations, community outreach, and the marketing of services. Serves the Superintendent and Board of Trustees as the top public information and media communications professional and advisor.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Executive Director, Public Affairs and Marketing is a senior management position, responsible for directing, coordinating, facilitating, and accomplishing the District's community relations and public information goals and strategies. The Executive Director is also responsible for integrating outreach and communications efforts to reach the public, other government agencies, and the media. The Executive Director requires considerable skill at and extensive experience at mobilizing and managing District efforts to support and advocate on behalf of specific strategic initiatives of the College.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:

Education, Training and Experience:

The classification requires a Bachelor's degree in public policy, political science, or related discipline; and a minimum of five years of progressive experience in public relations, marketing research, and/or intergovernmental affairs representation, with three years in a leadership capacity; or a combination of education and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
Requires a valid driver's license.


Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.

  • If you participate in and fail any examination segment, you must wait a period of 90 days (~3 months) to test again for the same classification.

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) Application Review: (Pass/Fail)
  • Job-Related Demonstration Oral Panel Interview(s) with additional Subject Matter Experts and/or Internal Stakeholders: 100%
  • Final interview with the Superintendent/President and other designated district leaders.
