The Executive Director, Equity and Venture Capital candidate will possess strong business acumen with experience in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industry. The candidate will lead the Equity and Venture Capital group and be responsible for a purposeful investment strategy. In this role, the candidate will provide leadership in setting strategic areas of focus, performing strategic and commercial assessments of equity opportunities, proactive management of the existing equity portfolio, management of VC relationships and LP investments, collaborating with other business units to perform due diligence and valuation, and managing related transactions processes. The candidate is required to have strong personal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to facilitate highly visible and time-sensitive business development projects.

Key activities:

  • Responsible to formulate and optimize Equity and VC strategy to enable enterprise goals and objectives. Ensure Equity and VC team enables industry-leading BD activities and active collaboration portfolio.
  • Demonstrate leadership and business acumen while collaborating closely with and proactively engaging internal Alliance Management, S&E, Research and Early Development, Global Drug Development, Finance, Enterprise Strategy, Commercial stakeholders and potential external partners.
  • Lead deal teams to negotiate, contract, and execute complex Equity and LP investments.
  • Actively build and manage relationships with top VC funds to inform investment decisions, ensuring a strong network linked to BD strategy. Maintain and enhance VC existing structure and enterprise engagement.
  • Oversee and lead equity investment operations and processes, ensure robustness and timeliness of execution. Manage book of work reviews, overall portfolio assessment and internal review meetings, as necessary. Ensure fit-for-purpose internal governance and communication approaches.
  • Lead training and engagement of enterprise-wide Board Observers/Members, timely check-ins and reviews of relationships. Build pipeline of future BMS representatives.
  • Lead the equity investment deal process:
    • Assemble initial team members, coordinate resources and ensure scheduling of meetings
    • Lead project team interactions with functional representatives, including those from third parties (i.e. lawyers, accountants, buyers, and consultants, etc.)
    • Provide insights to the commercial and financial evaluation process, assumptions, and outputs
    • Lead and manage the development and drafting of project team deliverables and recommendations
  • Recommend and develop proposed deal structure and terms, utilizing an in-depth knowledge industry deal making trends. Collaborate with senior leadership to lead evaluation alternative investment approaches where appropriate. Constantly evaluate industry trends for new approaches.
  • Lead the delivery of business assessments and recommendations of external equity investment opportunities, including deal proposals, valuation, deal status, and key issues of the transaction to BMS governance bodies for endorsement.
  • Lead or coach team members to negotiate and communicate key deal issues, risks, and updates to leadership and senior internal stakeholders, including collaborating with Transaction Legal in drafting and revising term sheet and contracts.
  • Lead or direct team members to participate in Equity and VC external partnering events (JPM, BIO, BIO EU, BMS Partnering Days etc.) and technical / scientific meetings, including preparing materials such as presentations, FAQ and related documents.
  • Present to senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage and coach direct reports.

Experience Desired:

  • MBA, PHD, PharmD, MD or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience within Pharma, Biotech, venture capital and minimum of 7 years of relevant Equity and Venture Capital experience having completed multiple major or complex deals (e.g., deal sheet in sourcing, managing, and executing complex equity investments).
  • Strong experience in the VC space managing relationships, developing industry knowledge, and executing multiple, significant equity and LP investments.
  • Scientific background with ability to assess opportunities across therapeutic areas, research and technology platforms, and collaboration structures with relevant internal BMS stakeholders; strong interpersonal skills and understanding of pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process. Ability to integrate scientific knowledge into business model.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently with a high degree of independence.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills, with experience in managing direct reports.
  • Able to communicate effectively with senior management.
  • Ability to develop equity deal structures and working knowledge of industry deal trends. Possess experience managing strategic equity portfolio activities including managing monetization and closeout of positions.
  • Take leadership role on major deals and lead the equity investment team on all aspects of major deals.
  • Strong understanding of biopharma BD and Alliance activities including Equity and VC strategic roles in enabling those.
  • Effective at building relationships across internal stakeholder groups and providing coaching and training. Gathers and shares information effectively. Works well with and exerts influence on multi-disciplinary teams. Facilitates candid dialogue and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Comfortable with, and has experience of, managing operational activities and processes.
  • Competence in reviewing and editing contracts and providing direction to Legal in term sheets and contracts.
  • Demonstrated strong negotiation skills.
  • Consistently deliver on commitments in a timely manner.
