About LISTEN Community Services

LISTEN Community Services’ mission is to provide services and support to meet the critical needs of Upper Valley individuals and families. For over 50 years, LISTEN has been on the front lines in the region providing vital support for people facing financial hardship. They are members of our community—our own neighbors—who have exhausted all resources and struggle to purchase necessities such as groceries or heating fuel. Since its founding, the organization has been a key leader in coordinating multiple comprehensive social services and has grown to serve 25 towns across VT and NH.

LISTEN’s mission has always been important; today, it may be more so than ever before. The demand for help with assistance such as food, housing, and utility assistance is now at an all-time high. The staff speak every day with individuals and families who are unable to make ends meet and connect them with a variety of resources. They are passionate about making sure that those who are the most vulnerable—seniors, families, people working two or even three jobs—can move forward, rebuild, and thrive.

LISTEN’s primary programs:

  • Address food insecurity through our free food pantry and community dinners,
  • Ensure people can avoid eviction through housing assistance and stay warm and safe with electric and fuel assistance,
  • Provide gently used clothes and household goods with thrift store vouchers, and
  • Coordinate other personalized services to support clients’ efforts to become self-sufficient.

These services are offered year-around, in addition to general service coordination, client counsel, and referrals. LISTEN also operates four separate thrift stores in Canaan and Lebanon, NH and White River Junction, VT. We are the largest resource in the region where shoppers can purchase quality, affordable second-hand items.

LISTEN’s impact is a direct result of our community’s support. The service programs are funded by individual contributions and grants and supplemented by the sale of donated goods in our stores. The thrift stores are dependent on local donations of housewares, clothing, electronics, furniture, and more. In addition, volunteers offer a variety of assistance across our programs and stores.
