The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12. Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains. Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar. Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

Job Summary:

This position's responsibilities are to perform a wide variety of maintenance and repairs to District facilities and equipment, including wiring, electrical equipment and system repairs, plumbing fixtures and pipe installation and repair, machine tooling and repair, welding, painting, glazing and using a variety of tools of the trades.


Essential Job Functions:

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:


  • Cleans assigned district facility to provide a sanitary and safe environment for student learning and support functions; vacuums, dusts, mops, sweeps, cleans bathrooms and showers, picks up and empties trash, changes lights, removes graffiti and provides a wide variety of cleaning and custodial services.
  • Monitors heating unit for the school building to provide warmth for student learning and support functions; keeps Maintenance Department up to date on any heating/cooling issues.
  • Opens and/or locks building doors for security according to established procedures.
  • Sets up and takes down a wide variety of equipment and furniture for events, assemblies, public use of school facilities and other functions; moves a variety of equipment and furniture as needed to meet the needs of students, staff, and the public.
  • Assists teachers, students, and administrators in locating needed equipment and providing emergency cleaning.
  • Maintains effective communication with building administrator, Director of Facilities, students, parents, staff and the public for safety, security, and public relations.
  • Maintains building safety and security by checking locks and alarms; notes and reports needed repairs or other safety or security risks.
  • Performs routine repairs to furniture, doors, walls, and other minor maintenance items; performs limited carpentry, painting and plumbing to maintain the facility as needed.
  • Responds to building maintenance work orders as directed.


OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs major summer cleaning of facility, including floor finishes, furniture, equipment, painting, and repairs to prepare buildings for the start of the student school year.
  • Stocks and orders custodial supplies as assigned.
  • Provides supervision to student helpers as assigned; trains, monitors, motivates, coaches, and corrects students in custodial tasks.
  • Assists with maintenance of grounds as assigned by sweeping walkways, removing litter and graffiti, weeding flower beds, clearing ice or snow, and related maintenance of an attractive school facility.
  • Serves as member of the custodial / maintenance team of the district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

DEMANDS:

  • May experience frequent interruptions.
  • Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors.
  • Required to shift focus to respond to student, staff, and public needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Required to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Sometimes required to move heavy objects such as furniture and equipment.
  • Ability to comfortably and safely lift, move, or carry objects that are a minimum of forty (40) pounds.
  • Required to operate power equipment such as buffers and scrubbers.
  • Exposed to cleaning and stripping chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear such as gloves or masks.
  • Exposed to noise from power equipment.
  • Grounds maintenance requires occasionally working outdoors in inclement weather.
  • May be required to work from ladders or scaffolds.
  • May be exposed to diseases carried by students.

POSITION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to distinguish cleaning chemicals and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to learn the operation of a variety of cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of routine repairs and maintenance, including some painting, carpentry, plumbing and other general maintenance.
  • Ability to move and position furniture and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Skill in communicating with staff, students, and parents in a positive manner.
  • Ability to follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the public.

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma, equivalent or successfully pass a district-required test that will test for the skill level required for the position as an option to the education equivalency.
  • Experience with cleaning equipment and techniques.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Experience dealing with school-aged children preferred.

Pursuant to Chapter 43.43, Washington Laws of 1990, the recommended applicant will be required to complete a disclosure form indicating whether he/she has been convicted of crimes against persons listed in the law. In addition, a background check, based on fingerprints, will be requested from the Washington State Patrol.
