Epidemiologist I / Epidemiologist II

The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center is seeking an Epidemiologist I or II, dependent upon experience and qualifications. There are two positions available. The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) serves the 34 federally-recognized Tribes, four urban Indian communities, and three Indian Health Service (IHS) service units within the Bemidji IHS Area—Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago, Illinois.

The Epidemiologist I will serve as an entry-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection and prevention of diseases and injuries. Working as a team member, under the direction of the Senior Epidemiologist, conduct routine epidemiologic functions, technical assistance to Tribal Nations, and provide training on the basic principles of epidemiology as well as other important public health matters. Attendance as scheduled is an essential function of this position. Frequent travel is required to meet the needs of the position.

The Epidemiologist II will serve as an intermediate level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a broad and complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection and prevention of diseases and injuries. Working independently or as an experienced team member, under the direction of the Senior Epidemiologist, provide expertise for specific programs or complex analysis and technical assistance to Tribal Nations. May provide technical leadership, guidance, and coordination of work for Epidemiologist I or other program specific staff. Attendance as scheduled is an essential function of this position. Frequent travel is required to meet the needs of the position.

Principal Duties

The Epidemiologist I will provide epidemiologic functions such as analysis, collection, and interpretation of Federal, State and Tribal health information, to the Indian Health Services (IHS) Bemidji service area. *Participates in developing epidemiologic investigations/studies using scientific, technical methods and practices to identify and evaluate health conditions. *Provide assistance with health data collection, using data for program planning, and program evaluation in areas of chronic disease, infectious disease, maternal and child health, and others as defined by the needs of the service area. *Acquire data for, produce, and update community health profiles for the Tribes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. *Perform analysis by using epidemiologic statistical techniques to interpret and analyze. *Use surveillance systems to collect disease and health outcome data. *Present scientific advice in assigned programs or issues, to various partners where required and directed. *Conduct literature reviews and assist in preparing reports using behavioral science, demographic and epidemiologic techniques and evaluation. *Make oral presentations to diverse audiences, both scientific and non-scientific. *Reacts to requests for information from community partners and follows its progression through to completion including written and oral responses. *Work with State public health staff and Indian Health Service staff to acquire data needed for health profiles and to coordinate public health training and initiatives with Tribes. *Coordinate with other Epidemiologists serving Tribes in the Bemidji area to produce regional data products, write semi-annual and annual reports, provide training, and coordinate program advisory committee. *Participate in development of work agreements with state, county, and local public health agencies and medical providers. *Participate in research projects as assigned by the Senior Epidemiologist and the Epidemiology Center Director. *Follow direction from senior staff and integrates perspective. The position may work on topic areas including but not limited to breastfeeding support and promotion; COVID-19 mitigation; COVID-19, influenza, adult, and childhood vaccinations; Emergency preparedness; HIV and STIs; Intimate partner violence; Maternal and child health; Substance use disorder; Suicide.

The Epidemiologist II will participate in planning of epidemiologic investigations/studies using scientific, technical methods and practices to determine feasibility and approach to evaluate health conditions. *Provide scientific advice and technical assistance to the Bemidji service area with respect to surveillance and other epidemiologic data and evaluation expertise. *Collaborate with senior epidemiologist to determine design process, methodological techniques and processes in the survey or investigation of health data, for program evaluation as defined by the needs of the service area. *Perform statistical analysis related to complex analytical investigations involving highly specialized scientific data. *Adapts or combines a variety of existing statistical methods for to fulfill or guide specific project needs for the Tribes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. *Conduct advanced descriptive and comprehensive analysis of the surveillance data. Report key findings and perform evaluations of the surveillance system. *Generate descriptive analysis of data for a variety of audiences. *Conduct literature reviews and prepare reports for preparation of publications and evaluation. *Make oral presentations to diverse audiences, both scientific and non-scientific. *Reacts to requests for information from community partners and follows its progression through to completion including written and oral responses. *Consult on technical problems where solutions may not conform to established protocols and may require modification of approaches or applications. *Provide consultative services on large and difficult programs or projects. *Work with State public health staff and Indian Health Service staff to acquire data needed for health profiles and to coordinate public health training and initiatives with Tribes. *Coordinate with other Epidemiologists serving Tribes in the Bemidji area to produce regional data products, write semi-annual and annual reports, provide training, and coordinate program advisory. *Participate in development of work agreements with state, county, and local public health agencies and medical providers. *Participate in research projects as assigned by the Senior Epidemiologist and the Epidemiology Center Director. This is a fulltime exempt position working Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm. The worksite is located at the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Main Office, Lac Du Flambeau Wisconsin. This is an office position, not a remote position. This position, based on skills and experience, has a salary range of $55,000-65,000 annually with benefits including Annual Leave, Personal Leave and Holiday Pay; Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSAand401(k) Retirement Plan. This position requires frequent travel for the purposes of attending community and program related activities. Drug and background screening is required before hire.

Qualifications:

Epidemiologist I Required: Master’s degree in Public Health with emphasis in epidemiology or analysis and assessment. Preferred: Experience working with Native American Tribal Governments, Tribal organization and/or not-for-profit agency in epidemiology. Ability to work independently and as a program team member. Evaluation experience is preferred. Individual must possess: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people; speak in front of groups. Individual must be able to address a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, apply statistical calculations to findings, and the ability to compose complex business correspondence (reports, health profiles.) Requires a high level of confidentiality. Must possess valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel.

Epidemiologist II Required: Master’s degree in Public Health with emphasis in epidemiology with > two years’ experience in epidemiology or public health agency OR a doctoral-level degree in epidemiology OR other non-epidemiology graduate degree or certification (e.g. RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g. MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service or CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship) OR at least 4 years’ experience performing epidemiologic work under the guidance of a Tier 3 Epidemiologist or higher. Preferred: Experience working with Native American Tribal Governments, Tribal organization and/or not-for-profit agency in epidemiology. Ability to work independently and as a program team member. Evaluation experience is preferred.
