The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Design Division is seeking to hire an engineering student assistant. In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will work under the close supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor to achieve practical experience in work tasks related to the field of land surveying.


Conditions of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.


Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).


Minimum Qualifications

Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.


Preferred Qualifications

Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Student will assist in making and recording survey measurements needed for the development of field notes and electronic files as well as assists in the final preparation of such notes and files, subject to review by the supervisor.
  • Assists the supervisor in performing calculations necessary to make field checks and measurements of drainage facilities, reference points, topographic features, etc.
  • Assists the supervisor in performing the necessary survey calculations needed to ensure proper project setup and accurate data collection.
  • Assists supervisor with the electronic processing of field survey data, when necessary.
  • Assists the supervisor in performing and evaluating record data research.
  • Assists the supervisor in the proper operation, maintenance and adjustment of all survey instruments used by the survey crew, such as electronic levels, total stations, GPS equipment, remote sensing equipment and other necessary equipment used in the setting and collecting of survey data.
  • Carry equipment, tools and materials up to 60 pounds over various types of terrain to and from the work site as directed by a supervisor or lead worker.
  • Perform manual labor such as digging, clearing of brush, setting of durable monuments, pipe driving, removal of asphalt, construction of concrete monuments, and any other work necessary to recover or establish survey monuments.
  • Assists in the correct placement of survey control stakes.
  • Assists the supervisor by preparing for the daily assignment, including stocking mat erial onto vehicles, as required, to accomplish the task. Reports any personal injury acquired during course of work to the supervisor immediately.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office or in a field environment.
