North Bethesda health and human services consulting firm seeks organized, detail-oriented team member to provide substantive editing for a range of health-focused content, including complex scientific documents, blogs, online content, toolkits, manuals, fact sheets, consumer education materials, and radio/video scripts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Edit and proofread content for clarity, grammar, punctuation, spelling, format, and consistency with adherence to established style guides
  • Ensure all products represent the voice of the client
  • Follow federal government plain language requirements
  • Coordinate and communicate with internal and external teams to track products through their lifecycle
  • Assist in maintaining style guides and standards
  • Contribute to proposals and support other JBS projects as requested

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s or higher degree in journalism/media, English, or communications—or a health-focused degree with equivalent experience in content editing.

Language: English fluency (oral and written)

Experience: At least 5 years of experience editing content that focuses on health, medical conditions, chronic diseases (e.g., cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, or weight management), and/or behavioral health issues (i.e., prevention, treatment, and recovery as related to mental illness and substance misuse)

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of at least one major style guide (e.g., AP, APA, AMA, Chicago, GPO) is required. Knowledge of multiple style guides, and experience developing and maintaining custom style guides for specific products, projects, or clients, is strongly preferred.

Ability to pass a short editing test is a must.

Skills: Strong written and oral communications, collaborative, and organizational skills, with ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail. Commitment to customer/client service.

Software Proficiency: Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word)

Location: Remote


PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: A history of working as an editor for federal contractors in the health communications sphere or directly with federal health-focused agencies like NIH, SAMHSA, CDC, or similar would be strongly preferred, as would any certifications or honors in medical writing or editing.
