The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) is an active network comprised of over 40 member public health institutes in 33 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Public health institutes are nonprofit organizations that improve the public’s health by fostering innovation, leveraging resources, and building partnerships across sectors, including government agencies, communities, the health care delivery system, media, and academia. NNPHI and its member institutes work together to implement public health policy and program initiatives throughout all 50 states. NNPHI offices are located in New Orleans and Washington, DC. Position Summary:

NNPHI, in collaboration with the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is seeking a Drug Overdose Surveillance Fellow (the “Fellow”) to work with CDC’s Overdose Morbidity Team within NCIPC’s Division of Overdose Prevention. The team is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented individual with strong project management skills to assist multiple units within the Overdose Morbidity Team. The Fellow will assist in the development of technical assistance materials for state and local health departments and data submission guidance documents/templates for the projects listed below. Prior experience developing technical packages or in overdose prevention work is not required to be successful in this role, but an interest in learning is a must. A Master’s degree in public health or related field is required. Under the guidance of NNPHI, the Fellow will work with a CDC mentor and other CDC colleagues from the Overdose Morbidity Team.

This Drug Overdose Surveillance Fellowship is administered by NNPHI through its Cooperative Agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (OT18-1802, Strengthening Public Health Systems and Services through National Partnerships to Improve and Protect the Nation’s Health). The fellowship is funded for one year with the possibility of extension for one or more additional years. The Fellow will be a full-time employee of NNPHI placed with the CDC NCIPC’s Overdose Morbidity Team. This position requires approximately 5% travel to conferences and other relevant meetings, and funds are provided for professional development throughout the fellowship year. Preference for candidates based in Atlanta or willing to relocate, but remote work with occasional travel to CDC’s Chamblee campus will be considered for the right candidate. The Fellow will have the opportunity to:

• Work closely with experts in epidemiology and public health.
• Join a team conducting surveillance related to nonfatal overdoses.
• Contribute to the development and writing of reports, protocols, and manuals.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assist with the implementation of the surveillance components of the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program including:
• the Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) system, which monitors nonfatal overdoses using syndromic surveillance and hospital discharge data;
• surveillance of linkage to and retention in care;
• biosurveillance (laboratory testing) for both outpatient settings and nonfatal overdoses treated in emergency departments; and
• nonfatal and fatal data linkages.
• Prepare technical assistance materials and guidance documents for OD2A recipients and/or OD2A staff and partners
• Work in partnership with CDC staff to develop data submission templates (no prior experience necessary)
• Other general support as required

Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in public health or related field
• Knowledge of public health, epidemiologic concepts, and/or overdose prevention preferred, but those with the desire to learn will be considered
• Strong writing skills
• Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, especially with time-sensitive work
• Capacity to manage multiple projects, timelines, and deadlines at once
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively on a team and with diverse partners
• Readiness to interact with a variety of people and assume diverse duties and tasks
• Ability to compose reports, presentations, and written communication in an organized, logical, and concise manner
• Proactive with the ability to work with minimal supervision and follow through on assignments
• Ability to translate science and technical issues into concise written material for a broad set of stakeholders
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
