The Director of Residence Life is a full-time professional staff member reporting directly to the Dean of Students. The position requires living in College-owned property adjacent to or on campus. The Director of Residence Life manages all aspects of campus residential facilities and provides direction and support to co-curricular programming within the residence halls. The position engages in short- and long-range planning around effective and efficient residence life operations while supervising all residence life staff. The Director is expected to know, understand, adhere to and uphold all College, residential policies and regulations and ensures all staff members of William Jewell College Residence Life comply with College policy while also maintaining a strong culture of community and engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Residence Life provides the vision, management, and direction for the department of residence life at William Jewell College.
  • Provides leadership to develop and implement programs and operations that enhance the student experience for students living on campus.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments across campus to improve the student experience and occupancy in the residence halls through programming, safety initiatives, facilities maintenance, and recruitment of incoming and returning students. Aligns Residence Life operations and programming to enhance student retention and success, as well as partners with other offices to ensure the institution meets retention goals. Manages assessment efforts around residential student learning and student satisfaction with the residential student experience.
  • Active participant in the department of Student Life and in other campus leadership groups and committees.
  • Responsible for meeting College goals related to residence hall occupancy and auxiliary revenue, including partnering with the Admissions Office to bring incoming students to residence life. Establishes accurate occupancy, revenue reports and budget analysis.
  • Oversees the management of all room assignment-related tasks for new and returning students, mid-year room change requests, and communications to internal and external stakeholders regarding room assignments on campus.
  • Manages communication with students and parents regarding concerns around the residential student experience.
  • Oversees, evaluates, and assesses the residential facilities with the department of facilities, including communicating regularly with the Director of Facilities to monitor residence hall maintenance, housing facilities improvements and deferred maintenance, and housekeeping needs. Consults with the department of campus safety, department of facilities, and dining services to address safety, facility, and meal plan issues.
  • Assists with the annual editing and publishing of the Student Handbook.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bachelor’s degree required. Three or more years of related experience preferred. Requires superior organizational skills and verbal communication skills, staff training, student and parent contact, and public speaking; writing skills needed to maintain policies, programs, and procedures for the departments as well as for all written material representing the College’s orientation programs and multicultural website. Also requires ability to analyze emergency situations and make decisions quickly. Basic computer skills required to prepare written materials and work with the College’s recruitment database/software.
Working Conditions
Mixture of regular office work incorporated into a live-in environment with college students. Position entails long hours during academic year as incumbent is “on-call” to respond to student, parent(s), and staff needs/emergencies. Position also requires work on many evenings and weekends
Supervisory Responsibilities
Environment requires the candidate to have an understanding of supervisory responsibilities, as the position will oversee the leadership of our sororities.
Compensation
Rent/maintenance-free, year-round residence, meal plan during the academic year, plus salary.
