We are seeking a highly motivated, innovative leader to join us as a Director of Global Portfolio and Resource Management. Internally knows as the Director of Business Strategy and Operations, reporting to the Executive Director of Business Strategy & Operations in Technical Operations, this leader will be responsible for building and continuously improving the organization’s business project portfolio planning and resource management business processes and tools so that the organization can appropriately resource the most impactful business projects. In addition to their role on the Business Strategy & Operations Leadership Team, the Director will interface with other senior leaders as a member of the Technical Operations Extended Leadership Team with the responsibility managing one or more employees.

To create a strong partnership with stakeholders and leaders across the corporation, as well as to foster continued professional growth, we would like this Director to be based in our global headquarters in Santa Monica, CA. We may also consider this position to based in Kite’s facilities at Frederick, MD or Oceanside, CA.

Responsibilities of the Director of Global Portfolio and Resource Management includes:

Portfolio Management:

  • Owns and manages the global intake process to determine what work comes into site and functional portfolios, ensuring alignment to strategic goals and availability of resources so that projects are completed on time and in budget.
  • Develops the process for identification of the programs and projects that have the highest strategic priority and lead the organization in finalizing the annual portfolio of these (i.e., the global portfolio planning process
  • Builds and continuously improves a prioritization schema that enables the aforementioned identification.

  • Creates and leads the organization through an annual calendar of activities to manage the portfolio of programs and projects.

  • Develops and publishes portfolio health metrics.
  • Leads the organization through status reviews and adjustment/de-prioritization discussions to keep the portfolio on track and relevant.
  • Continuously improves the process so that the organization can focus and deliver on its strategic priorities.

Resource Management:

  • Builds, secures, and executes cross-functional support for a strategic plan for improving current capabilities and developing future capabilities including actual time tracking and scenario modeling.
  • Leads a team of site and functional representatives to design, implement, execute, and improve a consistent business process and fit-for-purpose tools for resource management with inputs from key stakeholders across Tech Ops functions.
  • Develops and executes the implementation, training and change management plan for resource planning/forecasting process.
  • Leads routine and ad hoc product resource forecasts process and deliver forecasts to the CMC teams, working closely with the CMC team leaders and CMC team project managers to ensure alignment on requirements and timelines, and ensure approval from the functions prior to reporting.
  • Leads the process to routinely update resource forecasts for other work types (project, volume-driven, other).
  • Proactively communicates progress, ensure key stakeholder alignment and escalate issues in a timely manner.
  • Along with Director of Project and Program Management, co-owns the decision on which tool(s) to use to support the portfolio and resource management processes, including participation and/or leading the evaluation and selection process of any new tool(s).

Basic Qualifications:

PhD degree with 8+ years of Portfolio and/or Operations and/or Resource Management and/or Program Management experience

OR

MS / MA degree with 10+ years of Portfolio and/or Operations and/or Resource Management and/or Program Management experience

OR

BS / BA degree with 12+ years of Portfolio and/or Operations and/or Resource Management and/or Program Management experience

OR

High School Degree with 16+ years of Portfolio and/or Operations and/or Resource Management and/or Program Management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Outstanding understanding of the drug development process and corporate governances

  • Strong people leader with an excellent ability to communicate with all levels within the organization, listening and influencing to lead change throughout an organization.

  • Strategic thinking, strong business acumen, ability to manage ambiguity and complexity.

  • Ability to build strong relationships and establish trust.

  • Proven ability to successfully lead change initiatives in matrixed global organizations.

  • Ability to motivate and coach others under their direct or indirect management.

  • Embraces continuous improvement and practical user of Lean and Six Sigma problem solving methodologies.
